however I wanted more data on things like the circumflex arteries
The book was OK, however I wanted more data on things like the circumflex arteries, and the blood enzymes such as Troponin I and what the results of the enzymes mean in the context of whether a person has had a heart attack or not. I wanted a fine balance between Heart 101, and a book that it took a doctor to understand. The book was OK, but I wanted more.

A Great Addition To Your Personal Medical Self-Help Library.
This book by a cardiologist, Dr, James M. Rippe, is one of the best patient supportive books on prevention and treatment of heart and arterial malfunctions and diseases that I have read. The reader is not treated as a dummy by this author. Rather, the reader is approached as an apprentice who wants to learn enough about vascular diseases, heart failure and arterial and blood disorders to enable the reader to take a more active, positive role in working his or her way to a more healthy blood chemistry and heart. As one who is all too familiar with the ravages that are wreaked upon the human body by improper diet and inadequate exercise, I can appreciate this book. Had it been available to me twenty-five years ago, I may well have prevented high cholesterol, belly fat and other afflictions that I am now hoping to arrest and reverse using the knowledge that is so well presented by Dr. Rippe. The book presents the science behind the recommendations for improving your cardiac and vascular health. A number of excellent recipes for heart healthy meals are contained in the book. If you are seeing a cardiologist or medical doctor and they discuss lab findings. this book will make you conversant with the terminology and the meaning of the numerical findings from the lab tests. Examples include the Lipid Panel including HDL, total cholesterol, calculated LDL and Risk Ratio. Many other lab indicators are also discussed. If your doctor thinks you require treatment for an obstructed carotid artery which can cause a TIA (transient ischemic attack) or a stroke, then the book will help you to understand the pros and cons of having either an endarterectomy or a carotid stent. The mechanism by which cholesterol builds up on the walls of your arteries is explained. The author discusses other medical interventions including open heart surgery, coronary artery bypass and more to provide you the basis to understand what your doctor is saying when these options may be discussed with you. Why strokes happen is discussed. The importance of healthy eating is pushed time and again in this book. It is better to treat yourself by eating a healthy diet than by medicating yourself for the effects of a poor diet. Arresting or reversing the risks posed by coronary artery disease and high cholesterol is not an easy task and takes a ton of mental discipline. By creating understanding in the reader, this book can play a major part in making the reader a healthier person over time. Do not plan on instant results, but know that taking the first step can lead to years of improvement in your vascular system and in your quality of life.

If you need a layperson’s guide to heart health, here it is.
Dr. Rippe has written a thorough and accessible book on understanding heart heart and disease. I’d buy this for anyone who has concerns about there cardiac status. There is solid information about recipes, exercise, diagnostics and nomenclature that can be a confusing whirl for the heart patient. Very clearly laid out here in easy to comprehend language. You can’t go wrong with this book. Please note that this is geared for the adult patient and does not cover pediatric heart dysfunction in any meaningful way. It doesn’t pretend to as that is not the goal here but I wanted to make sure that was understood.Great book, should be required reading!

This is several years old, and written at a level even below the usual Dummies tone. You’re probably better off doing research through reputable websites at this point.
