Shattered Dreams–But Hope by Drs. Laquita and Elton Higgs, is a book of both testimony and advice: testimony born out of the school of trial and suffering, and advice born out of practical experience in being long-term caregivers. Laquita and Elton have for the last 26 years been caregivers to two adopted daughters with early onset Huntington’s Disease (HD), which is hereditary, and they offer a gripping account of their extended experience in adjusting to the challenges of long-term caregiving, followed by sober practical counsel to others who are involved in similar caregiving experiences. A final chapter speaks specifically of the role of Christian faith in coping with the stresses of their long struggle. In the Appendices are a short talk given after Cynthia’s funeral by her older sister Liann and several poems by Elton on the emotional impact of his and Laquita’s relationship with their disabled daughters.

The complexity of the story told by the Higgses is heightened by the fact that their two youngest adopted daughters are mother (Cynthia) and biological daughter (Rachel). Elton and Laquita adopted Cynthia as a baby, knowing that she had HD in her background but hoping and praying that she would not develop the disease. Her childhood was normal, but when she became an adolescent, she began to manifest behavioral aberrations that her parents later recognized as being consistent with early onset HD. At age 25, Cynthia was diagnosed as having the disease, and soon afterward she became pregnant with Rachel. Since it was apparent that she could not function as a single mother, Laquita and Elton agreed to adopt Rachel at birth. This action ushered them into a complicated care-giving relationship that has lasted for more than 25 years.

Laquita and Elton emphasize the difficult but necessary development of trust in God’s goodness and a deep conviction that He is at work even when we can perceive no immediate evidence of it. Especially poignant is their very personal confession of their mistakes in caring for their HD-affected daughters and their struggles to understand that HD, not mere perversity, was the primary source of their daughters’ irrational and angry behavior. Thus, they had to accept that expecting their daughters to be normally responsible persons was both futile and unproductive. Instead, they had to learn simply to love them with God’s love and to pray constantly for God’s wisdom in carrying out their task. It is from this perspective of learning to survive through hardship that Laquita and Elton tell their story and offer both practical and spiritual counsel for caregivers everywhere.

    Everyone should read this book!
If you have HD loved ones, you will not feel so alone and you will have valid direction for life with HD. If you do not have HD loved ones, then you will become aware of this cruel disease and its terminal affects. Even the book’s title and cover are gates to its high worth. The writers “walk the walk and talk the talk.” The book is sensitive and ever forthrightly honest. It renders a practical guide with concrete help.Indeed, do read this book. You will have heightened awareness of harmed humanity.

Faith and hope in a seemingly hopeless situation
This book resonates with me in a lot of ways. The balance of raw emotion, facing what HD families can relate to, yet finding faith and hope when the situation is hopeless (by earthly standards) is beautifully written.

    Hope In Huntington’s
Toward the end of their book, Laquita and Elton Higgs focus on a small phrase from Paul’s first letter to the Thessalonians: “In everything give thanks.” Given the realities of Huntington’s Disease, their little book is an affirmation of the possibilities of thanksgiving – not for the disease, but within the reality of how it wastes body and soul of those it afflicts.I am a retired journalist, and I know the value of testimonials, which are first-hand accounts of experience. That’s what Laquita and Elton have given the reader here. They entitled their book “SHATTERED DREAMS — BUT HOPE.” It is their story of walking through a very difficult experience with two daughters who suffered from “HD,” as it’s known by shorthand.”Shattered Hope” is a painful journey for the reader – especially those of us whose own child-rearing days were far less demanding than what the Higgses experienced. And it surely must have been painful to share the story so candidly.Yet Laquita and Elton are well equipped to relate such an experience. Both are highly educated, articulate and fine writers. Their book is complex, nuanced and painfully descriptive. Yet it is full of hope, for both are followers of Christ. They write of one of many variations in what it means to take seriously their Lord’s command, “Take up your cross and follow me.”It has been months since I read the book. I remember shedding tears at points in the story, of my own heart being warmed and inspired by what I read. For this is, above all, a story of parental love. But it is also a story of caregiving, a role that falls to the lot of many who find themselves with a choice in life – shall I step up to the plate and take on the burden of caring for someone who needs the care? That is always a choice. Laquita and Elton both made the choice to give of themselves. Their book gives to the reader a lesson in how our Lord’s words play out in real life … but also how St. Paul’s words can be experienced even in the course of bearing the heaviest of burdens.

    Family growth through caregiving.
Huntington’s Disease is one of the most troubling of the neurodegenerative processes due to its onset at early age and the total absence of possible treatments that have expectation of altering the course. This multidimensional tale of parental coping, learning, adapting, accepting and finding meaning in the process is a beautiful story of mature growth and triumph through some of the most difficult circumstances of human life. It inspires and teaches as it thoroughly informs. The content is applicable to the challenges of caregiving throughout life. Those challenges include loss of function, capacity, cognition and changing roles which require accomodation to the demands of life, whether due to disease or simple aging. I highly recommend it for anyone facing the functional and neurologic decline of a loved one for whom they are responsible as care-giver.

Laquita and her husband Elton are two of the finest people I have ever known.
Huntington’s Disease is one of the most devastating diseases known to mankind. This book talks of the journey of Laquita and Elton as adoptive parents of a child with Huntington’s Disease. I am proud to say I know them personally and know this book is a testimony to their faith and dedication. The trials they speak of are typical in the HD Community and I myself have experienced them. This is a very worthwhile read!

Powerful Testimony from two caretakers that have been through the ringer…
I have a relative with Huntington’s Disease and reading this book really put things into perspective for me. If you know someone with HD, give them this book as a gift. It will change their life. Not only does it go into stories that demonstrate behavioral characteristics, it provides coping mechanisms for caregivers and family members.Note: one of their adopted daughters developed HD later on in life and the one they are still loving today had the early onset variety. Through it all, their love and faith shines through.Their story, for God’s glory! Enjoy.

An authentic and moving account of difficult caregiving.
This book details a very personal and moving account of angst and perseverance. It reports the agony of degenerative disease and some strategies for navigating that challenge. It is an authentic, practical, and inspiring exploration of a long obedience in the same direction, and a glimpse into a faithful family.
