You’ve heard from autistic authors.

You’ve heard from therapists.

Now hear from one extraordinary young woman who’s both.

Experience autism from the inside out through a rare fusion of professional skill and personal understanding. Reshape what you know about the autism spectrum and increase your ability to give support. Varied perspectives among autistic individuals, their families, and professionals have often been difficult to reconcile. Now, you can bridge that divide with guidance from someone who’s lived in multiple worlds. Find immediate, actionable options to build connections, foster communication, navigate challenges, and enhance interactions.

SPECIFIC CONTENT:

Part One, AUTISM BASICS, focuses on the definition of autism, what autism is not, and an overview of implications across the spectrum of neurodivergence.

Part Two, COMMUNICATION, discusses effective communication with autistic people, reducing ambiguity, increasing specific content, parent tools for encouraging conversation, relying on verbs, how “Plain Language” helps, when to wait instead of speaking, and the overlooked power of writing to support verbal interaction.

Part Three, BEHAVIOR, talks about the logistics of meltdowns and how to handle, cause and effects of stimming and perseveration; recognizing the basis of sensory distortion; outside help and self-advocacy for sensory seekers and sensory avoiders;, Theory of Mind and autistic people’s ability to “read rooms”; reconsidering the value of special interests; all or nothing perspective of “big feelings”; why eye contact can be hard and how to cope; and masking.

Part Four, INTERACTIONS, features the truth and implications of loneliness; innate versus learned social skills; the hidden rules causing social complications; encouraging independence; challenges with executive function; a collaborative approach to goal setting; and understanding disability accommodations.

Part Five, COMMON QUESTIONS, addresses the practical reality of DSM-5’s “Diagnostic Levels”; the why and how of therapy for autism; the value of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA); and routes to autism advocacy.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Following her appearance on the Netflix series Love on the Spectrum, author Kaelynn Partlow, RBT, amplified her social media reach, establishing herself as an influential voice in autism understanding and actionable advocacy. Over almost ten years providing clinical autism services, she has worked with clients spanning different ages and vastly differing levels of ability. Partlow lives in South Carolina with two supportive roommates and her Labrador, Finn.

Learn from Someone Who’s Been on Both Sides of the Table!

“…because it’s a constant challenge, it’s pretty easy for me… to teach social skills to other autistic people. [Others] have such a strong familiarity… it can get in the way of teaching. Their skills come so naturally they have difficulty deconstructing and explaining the pieces.”

Rising Star & the Legend

“Partlow gives practical advice and tackles today’s thorniest issues. The book she was never supposed to be able to write is a must-read for anyone eager to understand autism better. As a rising star in the field, Partlow is poised to become this generation’s Temple Grandin.” –Erin R. Hahn, Ph.D., Department Chair and Professor of Psychology, Furman University

“Loved Kaelynn Partlow’s information on ambiguity and communication. She gives lots of practical pointers on how to be more direct and specific when talking to autistic individuals. Vague, open ended questions are not effective communication.” –Temple Grandin, Author, Visual Thinking: The Hidden Gifts of People Who Think in Pictures, Patterns, and Abstractions

Why does an Autistic Child Need Therapy?

“I was the child without a diagnosis who could have benefited from therapy. I was the teenager who received badly needed therapy. I’m also the adult who has seen the therapy I now provide for others vastly improve their quality of life. So here’s what I know to be true. As a starting point, when a good therapist sets out to help an autistic person, here is what we’re not doing:

making them appear ‘normal’;’catching them up’ to neurotypical peers; or’fixing/changing’ who they are.

Here’s what a good therapist should be doing: teaching them skills that will help them remove the barriers they face because of their diagnosis.” –Chapter 17

Hard Truths about Interactions & Complications

“It’s common for me to hear people profess how deeply their experience aligns with my own. Unfortunately, it’s equally common for that conversation to grind to an awkward halt right at the most vulnerable point of my narrative. People can be really quick to say how much they understand and empathize—until it becomes incredibly obvious that they do neither…. Far more important than terminology is what those affected by profound autism encounter, not just from outsiders, but also from those inside the autism community. When newcomers to the world of autism get a glimpse of how tough reality is for the profoundly affected, they and their empathy usually fade quietly away.” –Chapter 3

I am going to recommend this to every family with whom I work!
Thank you so much for writing this book, Kaelynn! Oh how I wish that I’d had this book when I started my career as an SLP!! While I have family members who are on the spectrum, no one has ever been able to break things down and explain them in so clear a way as the author does in this book. Whether you are someone who knows someone with ASD and want to understand autism better, or you are a teacher, a therapist, and/or a parent, THIS book may be an absolute game changer for you! Kaelynn is so good at describing her own internal workings in a variety of situations, as well as making some very funny analogies to aid in the understanding of those workings for the neurotypical reader. There have been so many “Aha!” moments for me, as well as Homer Simpson “Doh!” moments, that I think anyone who is willing to really listen and be open to the information Kaelynn is sharing will greatly benefit from this book – even those on the spectrum who still struggle with identifying their own individual challenges. If I could afford it, I would buy this book for every family that I work with, it’s that good!As an SLP I have seen both the positive and the negative side of ABA, and Kaelynn is pretty even handed in her evaluation of the discipline from which she does her work: “The last point I’ll offer in my support of ABA therapy is the field’s commitment to ongoing improvement. I certainly understand that not every ABA practitioner embodies this value.” (pg 173, Life on the Bridge) As a medical practitioner myself, I think it is fair to say that there are many rehab professionals (okay, across all medical disciplines if we are being honest) across many different disciplines who hold themselves to higher values, and others that do not. As such, it is very important that parents and prospective patients really research the kind of intervention that they think is best for their child, as well as the practitioners who are going to work with their child in treatment. DIRFloortime and those trained in working with Gestalt Language Processors, are just 2 of the other, research based, highly effective treatments available for ASD individuals and their families. And for many children, a team approach that includes OT, PT, SLP and even ABA may be the most holistic way in which to support a child with multiple impairments. But this single short chapter (chapter 18, <12 pages), regarding treatment, is a very small section of the book, and even if you have strong opinions about ABA, Kaelynn has so much to teach about the internal workings of someone with ASD, that reading this book and just skipping chapter 18, does not at all diminish its value.Seriously, if you want to listen to authentic voices, you should take the time to listen to Kaelynn. She definitely has some things to say that do not fit into the current narrative of autistic adults, but that is not necessarily a bad thing. Rarely does any one group truly speak with a single voice. In Kaelynn's case, her voice is articulate, compassionate, feisty, and passionate, and completely her own. Well worth the time spent reading this book!

    Lots of great information
Very good insight into an autistic point of view. It really helped me understand my daughter especially on the subject of perseveration. It is written in very plain, easily understood language. So many books just have common sense information but this one really has good information.

This is the best book I’ve read on the subject of autism, and I’ve read lots! Kaelynn uses lots of very observant, very specific examples of how autistic people can experience certain aspects of life, and offers excellent advice to non-autistic people as to how to better understand and help the autistic people in their lives. I am autistic myself and greatly appreciate the thought that has gone into the content and layout of the book: it is easy to read and understand, and Kaelynn’s sense of humour shines through even when the subject matter is quite tricky. If you’re autistic, know anyone who is autistic (and you probably do, whether you- or they! – know it or not), and/or if your job involves helping autistic people – you should definitely read this. (Ok, that’s pretty much everyone!)

I found Kaelynn on social media and ordered her book. It was a fabulous, approachable read and explained several of the behaviors I’ve been seeing in some of my autistic students in a way that brought me into their world.

This book is a must read for anyone who knows or works with people on the spectrum. All the information is presented in a very clear manner, with great examples and suggestions for interventions and adaptations. It’s the best book on autism I have read so far.

As a mom and wife of higher functioning autistic people, who had read many books, this gave me a greater incite into my loved ones brains, as well at those on the spectrum who have trouble communicating verbally. I also really appreciate Kaelynn’s willingness to share her struggles and her triumphs. It gave me a lot of hope for my own teens.
