An essential guide for school professionals.
Research over the past five years in the area of autism has increased nearly exponentially, though often with confusing or conflicting results. School-based professionals (psychologists, SLP’s, counselors, teachers) are left to question the reliability and validity of their choices for screening, assessment, intervention, and support of school-age children and youth with autism. The author of A Best Practice Guide to Assessment and Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorder in Schools, Second Edition has successfully distilled from the research the most current practical and effective assessment tools, practices, and procedures for supporting children with autism in school. Each chapter highlights the best practices for identifying and responding appropriately to the educational and behavioral needs of children on the autism spectrum. Parents will also find this book to be a valuable resource when navigating through the educational system in their efforts to ensure an appropriate educational plan for their child. The Appendix section contains especially clear and concise information and terminology related to autism and co-occuring conditions as well as definitions and descriptions of laws and types of special education programming currently being offered to children with special needs. As a school psychologist, I greatly appreciate Dr. Wilkinson’s inclusion of Appendix (A-F) which provides the working professional with a quick and easy reference to research-proven assessment tools, an observation checklist, and a listing of effective interventions and practical education goals and objectives for children on the autism spectrum.I consider A Best Practice Guide to Assessment and Intervention for Autism Spectrum Disorder in Schools to be a valuable desktop resource offering the school-based professional the most current and evidence-based information for their work with children with autism.

Thorough and Comprehensive Tool for Autism evaluations within the School System
I found this book invaluable as I utilized it to develop a training for our School Psychologists in our large district. It was well laid out and it included thorough descriptions of the instruments that are recommended for a comprehensive evaluation of students suspected of being on the Autism Spectrum. Some of our psychologists were implementing less than robust evaluations of these students, mostly due to a lack of understanding of the different components crucial to a comprehensive assessment. The book was easy to navigate and provided a wealth of information for us. The presentation we developed using this resource is now being shared annually for our new School Psychologists and helping us maintain the highest of standards in our autism evaluations.

    A Best Practice Guide Updated
I have found Dr. Lee Wilkinson’s Second Edition of his best practice book to be a continued must read for the school psychology practitioner and other support professionals. Recent surveys and research have indicated that school psychologist and other school staff may not be adequately prepared to provide consistent evidence based assessment interventions to their clients. This text will help fill that void. This revised and updated edition reflects the most recent progress in assessment and intervention for autism spectrum disorders (ASD).School psychologists will find the list of assessment domains and tools especially helpful in selecting the appropriate instruments for screening and conducting a comprehensive developmental evaluation. The appendices contain checklists and observation forms that can be used in everyday practice. This book is a valuable resource and a welcome addition to the school psychologist’s professional library.

Used as a text for a graduate level autism licensing course-
Wilkinson’s Best Practice Guide to Assessment and Intervention for ASD in schools is a current, practical easy-to-digest manual that should be available to every special education team. Wilkinson outlines evidence-based practices for assessment of ASD in the school setting. He thoroughly discusses the advantages and disadvantages of formal and informal assessments and provides an outline and rationale to guide teams through the assessment process. The case studies are invaluable in understanding that students on the spectrum are each unique and demonstrate how to document assessment findings. Special educators will welcome the appendices that include ready-to-use checklists and sample IEP goals and objectives.

    Pure Gold! 🍀
This is literally one the top spectrum based educational book currently in print! Even the resource section at the back of the book has been strategically placed for quick access to frequent school- centered spectrum challenges. The book is one of only a handful that has been consciously updated to meet DSM V standards, while not neglecting students with a DSM IV diagnosis either. You will find a treasure trove of information, best practice, strategies, IEP goal statements, you name it is in there. Parents and coaches can also benefit from implementing some of suggestions offered by Dr. Wilkenson.

    Great resource for psychologists!
I purchased this book while working on an initial evaluation for a child with suspected Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). It was a great resource in guiding and structuring the process, and I felt confident I was assessing all areas. The book also discusses changes from DSM-IV to DSM-5, and described some evidence-based interventions. This is a great resource for psychologists assessing for ASD in the schools or in private practice.
