Sometimes referred to as a “miracle diet,” the ketogenic diet has helped doctors treat difficult-to-control epileptic seizures in thousands of children. Coauthored by four respected experts from Johns Hopkins, Ketogenic Diets continues to be the definitive guide for parents, physicians, and dieticians wanting to implement this strict diet. Anyone who is placed on the Ketogenic Diet will be told, essentially “prescribed” by their doctor to get this book.

This Fifth Edition has been extensively updated to reflect current advances in understanding how the diet works, how it should be used, and the future role of the diet as a treatment. Six new chapters address how to integrate the diet into all cultures, religions, and taste preferences new information on modified and less restrictive versions of the diet, and the Modified Atkins Diet for Epilepsy are included. The book also covers exciting new research that shows the diet may work for people with other neurological illnesses.

Changed my life for weight loss!!!
This book helped me put my Modified Atkins Diet (MAD) in perspective. I was afraid to go higher on healthy fats, but MAD is low compared to this spectrum. I am 54, female, losing weight, feeling great on 1200 Kcal, 64% healthy fat, 20% Protein, 16 % healthy carbs. This translates to approx. 80 grams of fat (My range is 75-80 grams), 56 grams protein, 44 grams carbs minus 15-20 grams fiber. My BP normalized in about three days. I make sure I get two bottles of “ZERO” brand vitamin water, fruit punch, the only one with 880 mg Potassium per bottle, in addition to straight water, to equal 9 cups per day. I also make sure I take TWO “YES” brand minerals per day, and two “YES” brand PEOs. My BMI is 25.4 now. I have easily lost 8 pounds. Exercise: HIIT at home: 30 seconds RUN in place, rest, repeat 5 times over course of day. 20 minutes fast walk, sometimes 30 minute slow walk with slow dog. I do not watch more than one hour of TV per day, otherwise do errands, light housework, two hours sitting writing / analyzing per day. I only mention the mineral management because it is critical. I sometimes drink two ounces of zero Powerade with sodium to keep the BP up. I measure BP every day. Breakfast Eggbeaters omlette with 3/4 cup mix of bell pepper, mushroom, bit of onion, chili paste. Cream, stevia in coffee. Lemon in water. Lunch is meat (50+ grams) / beans, broccoli and real butter, avocado, olives, cream into tea. Snack is big leaf lettuce smeared with mayo, avocado and lunch meat placed on top, rolled, delicious! 3-4 more olives. Dinner is 3 oz grass fed meat, big salad, 3-4 olives, 19 grams mac nuts. To increase calories, just keep ratio of fat to protein to carbs the same. The book mentions a fat to “carbs plus protein” ratio. I am not even hitting that much fat. They go as high as 2:1 or even 4:1 in severe epilepsy, but I am never needing to go that high, probably 1:1.2 at most.I LOVE the perspective on HEALTHY FAT that this book lends. Manage the minerals/ electrolytes.

and the doctors have recommended surgery. Being a Certified Holistic Health Coach
My mother had a minor stroke a couple of years ago and has experienced focal epileptic seizures as a result of the scar tissue in her brain. Medications make her depressed and lethargic, and the doctors have recommended surgery. Being a Certified Holistic Health Coach, I tried to work with my parents to address the issue nutritionally, with very little success. Her neurologist had suggested a vegetarian/vegan diet to help her lose weight, and I tried to convince my father that this was absolutely the wrong approach. My father is an inorganic chemist; so, any of my suggestions need to be backed up with scientific evidence. I also had trouble convincing him that eating more fat and eliminating carbohydrates wouldn’t lead to weight gain. I sent them a few books to help them understand why a high-fat diet would be beneficial to my mother. Knowing that any book I sent had to be written by an MD, I included this book along with _The Blood Sugar Solution_ by Dr. Mark Hyman and _Grain Brain_ by Dr. David Perlmutter. My father liked this one the best because it was the only one written based purely on scientific studies without conjecture. They even visited a nutritionist who supposedly specialized in epilepsy. The response I got from my father after that was, “He didn’t seem to know anything. You know much more, and the Ketogenic Diet book is much more helpful.” Based on my suggestions and this book, my parents are working toward changing their diets. Talk about validation!

Not for persons interested in Cancer diets.
I was primarily interested in the diet for cancer, and there is really nothing relating to cancer in the book. I’ve already resold it for that reason.

    Not for us
We were very concerned because so many medications did not work for my sons seziures and were considering this diet. It may be amazing I cannot tell you it was not for us and thankfully combination of medications have worked. This may be a viable option for some people it just seems very difficult to maintain and child must be able to fully comprehend the benefits of the diet and my child is cognitively impaired and did not understand. This is definitely not for everyone but seems very beneficial for some.

Great Addition to an Epilepsy Resource Library
I am so thankful we purchased and read this book. It answered so many questions we had & dispelled many of our fears about the diet. It has also helped us explain things to relatives & friends as we prepared for and began the diet. The book provides an overview, history, families’ experiences, recipes, resources, and much more. This book is well- & simply written, so is easy to understand; one doesn’t have to have a medical background to understand it. It was very reassuring to finally read something that was written by people who *know* rather than by people who just have opinions. We had read so much negative about the diet, but this helped us understand all the positives of the diet and that we could do it and it could be the answer to our prayers. I was so relieved to have the information presented in such a straightforward, easy to understand manner, I actually cried with relief (among other emotions) while reading it. A weight really lifted off my shoulders. If you are hesitant and reluctant like we were, just get it and read it; this book will make all the difference for you, whatever you decide. I really can’t say enough how wonderful a resource this book is!

Beide ein “Must read and must do” für jeden der Krebs hat. Leider werden keine Querverbindungen zu den wahren Ursachen von Krebs, die unterliegend dafür verantwortlich sind, warum wir überhaubt dringend bei Krebs den Stoffwechsel umschalten müssten….Reinhard Becker – Ama-vita
