Martin D’Amore and his wife are both physicians, so when they began to notice possible ALS symptoms in Marty, they desperately looked for other causes. But after many tests and meetings with experts, Marty finally got the word, he had Lou Gehrig’s disease, and the clock began to tick.

ALS robs its victims of their physical abilities, from their muscular activity, to their nervous system, and, finally, their ability to even breathe. All the while, the mind remains intact. It is a brutal, often soul-crushing disease, and yet Marty has persevered and even grown as a result of ALS. Discover how Marty’s battle with ALS has led him to a greater relationship with Christ, a better understanding of himself, and, finally, to great contentment and happiness.

Whether or not you or someone you love is battling ALS, this inspiring true story of love and courage will help you find joy through your sufferings.

    Impressed and Touched
I was curious to read this. Kirsten D’Amore is my first cousin…I read it in one sitting and I’m truly touched & uplifted by the message. This is a soul-inspiring book for everyone, not just for people suffering from ALS or other equally debilitating illness. Securing grace, meaning, & peace in the face of extreme hardship is something we all aspire to, and Marty gives a beautiful account of how we can achieve it. This is a book that will make you appreciate the highlighting tool. There are numerous passages that are utterly profound in their depth & higher understanding of how the most seemingly awful affliction can be rearranged into the ultimate salvation. I feel an amazing sense of comfort & strength after reading this. In sharing his journey, Marty gives a great gift. God Bless.

This is not a book only about living with illness or disease. This is a book about LIVING!
Mr. D’Amore captures his battle, his life with ALS in a book about the family struggle and it’s highs and lows. But it is done with humor, with a sense of living through it and not in a clinical way. If you have a terminal prognosis you will find an ally in your struggle, but I just saw life lessons told by someone who is not merely his illness, but a thinking, feeling, loving, true human being. It is for families of those battling, friends who feel they want to know more but are unsure what to do and for the healthy that can’t find a link between their lives and those who are with illness. It is a life book, a great read and worthwhile for all of us.

    A magnificent book
I went to med school with Marty and remember him as a kind and funny person. Marty had so much more depth that I did not recognize until reading about his deeply personal journal to serenity through the ravaging disease of ALS. His book is profound and deeply moving. The concept that suffering has meaning initially struck me when I read Viktor Frankl’s “Man’s Search for Meaning”-one of the most profound books I have ever experienced. Reading “Joy and Suffering” was a tremendous experience that has changed me. I am so sorry that Marty has passed. He has left an extraordinary legacy through his family and his book.

    Very emotional read
I have a very good friend who just passed away from ALS after 4 years of suffering. Eric McLaren left behind an amazing wife and 3 young boys. I work in the medical field and at work one day I was talking to one of my Drs about ALS and she said she has a friend whose suffering from it and she suggested this book. It’s very emotional but it’s so nice to understand what they go thru. My friend Eric wrote a book when he was first diagnosed up to when he decided to have them pull him off life support. I’m not sure when it comes out but at the funeral they said they finished it and it’s going to New York to be published. I can’t wait to read all about my friend knowing my family and friends where there for him and his family the whole time.

    Good for faithful
Great for those who like Bible quotes and prefer to learn directly from the victim. I do not have faith in a God who constantly fails to show benevolence over many centuries.

Enlightening and a joy to read!
ALS is a cruel disease and forces families and patients to look at day to day life from a different perspective on a daily basis. D’Amore paints an accurate and vivd picture of how to go on living when you face pain and suffering on a daily basis. The book is educational if you have the disease or are a caretaker. His continued joy and faith is inspirational and admirable. His ability to “offer it up” on a daily basis changed the way I think about my troubles. This is one of the books that will impact your life forever!
