Save not only your life, but the quality of it as well
My brother bought this for me when I was first diagnosed with type-2 diabetes. Less than a year later no longer taking shots and relying on Metformin alone. My bG averages 103 through low carb diet and minimal exercise. I follow none of the nutrition class series I attended which advised balancing carbs. That advice was like teaching an alcoholic to limit his alcohol instead of abstaining. My doc said I am one of 10 or so patients he has seen get their diabetes so well under control and I attribute that success solely to this book.A quick and easy read.A must have for anyone facing this deadly and debilitating disease. And oh – I feel the best I have in years. Had no idea how sick I had become. My chronic and overwhelming leg cramps are completely gone. Exhaustion is gone. Depression is gone. I wake each day with vitality and excitement for the day.Pizza Hut pizza without the crust is STILL Pizza Hut pizza. Ordering Chicken Marsala with grilled chicken and Italian veggies instead of fettuccine is still to die for. Knowing how bad bread, and rice, and potatoes are for you makes it so simple to pull them out. The difference in taste between your favorite burger with the bun vs without is so minuscule it makes pulling those carbs out of your diet easy once you understand how those carbs are killing you.If your doc can get you a continuous bG monitor you can experiment yourself and see, like the author, how your bG will go through the roof after eating a burger with the bun. Then eat it without and you’ll see your level not even make a blip on your readings. You’ll see for yourself how great the advice in this book is and you’ll find making the changes in your diet so truly simple and even satisfying.Buy the book and good luck to you or your loved one! Life is about to change for the better

Actionable advice but may not apply to your situation
Just finished reading this book and like many others here, I wish it had existed when I was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes about a year ago. What this book is good for:+ Newly diagnosed diabetics who want to understand how carbohydrates and insulin interact in common everyday scenarios (e.g. exercise). Although the examples are very much grounded in how Adam’s body responds to insulin / food, it is useful to understand the general “trend”.+ Helping understand how to change your diet and insulin regime to reduce blood sugar “peaks”.+ Generally improving your attitude towards diabetes management – Adam has a great sense of positivity and suggests lifestyle changes that can help.Who this book is not good for:+ Caring for others who have diabetes. It may help build empathy but it’s very much written from a “first person” point of view.+ It doesn’t really mention use of insulin pumps at all.+ People who may have significantly different lifestyles to Adam. Adam is a healthy person in his late 20s who has a white collar job and no children. I can only imagine how much harder things become if you’re on your feet all day, or have significant childcare responsibilities. (Hopefully when he gets to that stage of life, he’ll update this – I’ll definitely be interested.)+ If you’re a long distance athlete and have significant carb requirements. Much of his nutritional suggestions involve reducing carb intake – which is no bueno if you’re under significant training load.

Type 1 diabetes–Walking through the minefield
Hi there, AdamI just finished my first read of your new book, “Bright Spots and Land Mines. It truly reflects my journey with Type 1 over the years since my first insulin pump and the addition of glucose monitoring and carb-counting. Those new treatment tools have resulted in 17 years of very positive life management and thinking–out of the total of 60 years that I have been a Type 1 diabetic.I once counted the number of times (38) I have been hospitalized for diabetes and/or other health conditions over that 60 years and attempted to calculate the shots and finger sticks during that same period—however, it was mind-boggling. The positive report I can give is that since I started with the pump and glucose monitoring I have not been hospitalized even once and now generally have only 2-3 finger sticks in a day. I have no complications, though I am now seeing some changes in my labwork.I was 6 years old when I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and in the late 1950’s treatment was primitive. There have been tough times—such as a stillborn baby—but that shocked me into better choices and a much better life. Eighteen months later I gave birth to a healthy baby boy and now have four lovely grandchildren. But, the daily grind of diabetes and its attendant mental/emotional challenges remains. There is such a psychological component with Type 1 and I am glad to see you have touched on this in your book. When I was very young my uncle, a physician, told me that consensus in the medical community back then was that the biggest problem diabetics have is from the shoulders up (choices, attitudes, etc.). In a way it is true, but that is not the only problem we have, of course. In view of all the concerns I am so thankful that I have my eyesight and am free to walk or run wherever and whenever—and play with my grandchildren.Adam, thanks for your book for it is very helpful and I can second virtually all of it. You have been honest about the demands and pitfalls of Type 1 diabetes, but you communicated hope as well. Thanks!

I was told I was prediabetic in Oct 2020 and have read several books and articles on the subject of managing blood glucose. This is a simple book which looks at how Adam manages his diabetes with consideration to the influence that our mindset has to helping us in living with diabetes. It affects every aspect of our lives but keeping to simple rules can keep us on the right track. A motivating and practical guide. I will keep referring to it.
