Original price was: $43.95.$38.88Current price is: $38.88.
Children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) require specialized teaching strategies when learning about puberty, sexuality and relationships. This professional resource offers practical teaching advice geared towards the needs of young people on the autism spectrum. Beginning with information on good practice, policy, teaching methods and recent research, the book then divides into key sex education topics that assist professionals in developing their own individualized and developmentally appropriate curricula. Covering issues of gender, public and private, puberty, hygiene, emotions, sex and more, each topic provides an overview of the difficulties that children with autism might experience, discussion and activity ideas and photocopiable resources including instructional stories, checklists and illustrations. The final section demonstrates how to respond to ongoing patterns of inappropriate behaviour and put together a behaviour plan. Aiming to explain and support the child’s developing sexuality while also addressing crucial issues of safety, this book is a much-needed teaching manual for all professionals working with children and young adults with autism including educators in mainstream and special education, psychologists, therapists and social workers.

wonderful resource
Great resource for addressing sexuality with individuals with ASD. Has some “British” language and spelling but nothing that’s difficult to understand. Includes research backed information and specific strategies for teaching about a range of issues, as well as simplified “scripts” to use as is or as guides in addressing these issues. Also includes some useful visuals. The content is not “censored” and is sex positive (ie no shaming messages about sexuality), so I can see some people being offended… But as someone who works with adolescents/young adults with ASD I find this is a wonderful, comprehensive resource for dealing with a crucial piece of development that is often not adequately addressed. the book is intended for professionals but could also prove useful for parents.

A comprehensive explanation about boys and girls: their anatomy and creativity.
The information is concise, clear, informative, and the illustrations are on point.. This was needed to showand 11 year old girl and her autistic brother what to expect and how to react. No downside noted by me.I used a Gray’s anatomy in tandem with this book but I believe factual data eliminates confusion on many subjects.

One of the best resources available!
I cannot recommend this book enough! It is one of the best resources available for talking with children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders about all aspects of sexuality. I especially like that an individualized curriculum can be built specifically for a student’s needs using visuals, checklists, and lessons included in this resource. The straightforward language makes this book accessible to parents, teachers, psychologists, and anyone else who works with students with ASD.

Thank you!
Simple line drawings used to demonstrate healthy behaviors have been right on target for conversations with son on the spectrum! Content and concept levels have helped me as a parent educate instead of “preach” safety and self care.

Amazing book. I have used it in the past …
Amazing book. I have used it in the past but left it at the treatment center I was working with. Bought it again because it was so great. Tons of visuals, social stories, charts, and narrative.

I don’t normally write reviews but in case I felt I had to. I am a professional who works with children living with autism spectrum disorders every day. Sexuality and relationships is such an important topic to address properly, but it is made difficult as there (has been) such little information available on the topic. I am therefore so RELIEVED to have found this fantastic book. What I really like about it (aside from the fact that Davida is one of the first people to write a book dedicated to this topic) is the fact that it really is so easy to read and that it covers virtually every topic you could think of relating to sexuality and relationships. There’s so much excellent, practical advice and information including loads of resources that are possible to photocopy. Just brilliant! And it’s so clearly written that it’s suitable not just for professionals but for parents too. There’s also a great section in it about managing challenging sexual behaviours – an essential all rounder of a book!

This is a well structured book that any teacher supporting pupils with AUtistic Spectrum Conditions can use to help them navigate through the SRE curriculum and growing up. I would recommend it as a parallel curriculum. It is designed to support clear understanding, has social stories and visual support and emphasises how to be safe.
