A book of actually great help
I have an 17-year old daughter with PDD (Atypical Autism) who does not live with me but with her mother (we are divorced). My daughter’s diagnosis came in very late (only about 10 months ago) considering we have been taking her to psychiatrists and psychologists since she was 10 ys old, when the first strange traits showed up. This excellent book gave me a thorough insight on what is going on in her mind, and paved the way to my better understanding her attitudes and better contacting her, as far as it can be done. I have also discussed some of the issues in the book with her mother who, of course, living with her knows her the most but maybe did not grasp fully and with solid scientific grounds what the disdorder is about. I recommend it.

    Great for Beginners
If your child has just been diagnosed with autism or you are just wondering what autism is all about, this is the book for you. It gives you the symptoms of autism, where to get help, and how to cope with this issue. The book is written in fairly simple terms and can be easily understood by anyone. It is a great place to start.

It’s good, basic info, good for library building needed for ASD family.
Some of the info is outdated, thus the update in the new one coming out. But, this is a good basic guide that will give you ideas on where to begin when faced with an ASD diagnosis in the family. I also recommend getting info from Generation Rescue, TACA (Talk about curing autism), anything by the Autism Research Institute and Temple Grandin. It’s a long path in the fight with autism. I battle it everyday with my 7 year old son. It tries to take him into another world and I work at keeping him with us in this one. After changing his diet, removing toxins and allergens, getting him to good therapy PT and OT and Vision, homeschooling and focusing on group social skills, getting a good team of doctors and nurses and support behind us and building a solid library of books that give information from various points of view, he has lost his major symptoms of ASD to enjoy his life and enjoy his family/friends. The one piece of advice I give new ASD parents: This isn’t a death sentence, help your child be all he or she can be, use all help, never stop.

    The best I’ve read yet
Wow, this is the best I have read yet on autism,it actually covers other disorders on the spectrum and after reading it at the library first,I went to buy my own, as i wanted to have it always with me.This includes grief for me! now that is a good thing,(also for carers),then the list goes on, to much to list here, definately a guide for us,in understanding these disorders,i found this material also good for understanding ASD adults. A must read for sure.

    Excellent!
If you’re looking for a single book that encompases all the significant information relating to ASDs, this is the book for you. I liked it because the author lists any resources related to a particular topic in that section. There’s no searching through the back of the book to find what you need. I would suggest that any professional working with students/children with Autism pick up a copy.

    Not complete at all, biased
Not really a “complete” guide, and definitely pushing the anti-vaccine agenda, though she tries to hide it–read Temple Grandin instead for real science and true insight from an insider.
