Treasure trove of information about autism
Most of us toss around the term “autism” without having much idea of what it means to be autistic. This book delves into the complex world of the autism spectrum disorder (ASD) from multiple angles: the various ways individuals are affected, what may cause ASD, how ASD is diagnosed, what to expect, how various treatments and theories surrounding ASD differ, and perhaps most importantly, suggestions for mitigating the effects of ASD. Nearly half of the book consists of gluten-free, casein-free recipes to try making at home. (Since the GFCF diet has been shown to be helpful and is unlikely to be harmful, the authors point out that it may be worth a try.)This is one of the most practical health books I’ve ever seen, with robust descriptions of treatment plans as well as how standard tests are performed to determine whether or not an individual is autistic. The information is definitely geared towards parents–the recipe section includes a chapter on baby-friendly foods, and there’s advice on how to design meal plans for teens with special dietary needs–but even if you’re not a parent, this book will provide you with a good understanding of what autism is and how people with autism may respond to various situations.
