Very informative and easy to understand.
I wanted to find out more about autism and aspergers, but did not want to read a book that was too technical. This book was brilliant. It was laid out in such a way that made it easy to understand and follow. The difference between the way an autistic person and a non-autistic person thinks or is ‘hard-wired’, was compared to the different way in which a Mac and PC work. Both are set up differently and both work successfully, despite not being compatible. The book gave me a wonderful insight into how a person with autism might react to certain situations which they find difficult and stressful to cope with, and why this happens, and also how to give support when it is needed. The author also explains why autistic children and adults, who are perceived to be behaving inappropriately, are not being difficult or ‘naughty’, but just do not understand what is expected of them. More importantly their reactions to certain situations are not being understood by those around them and therefore the necessary support is not provided. A greater understanding of how autism can affect a person’s life would certainly help those who have this inherited condition, as well as helping their relations, friends and teachers. A really excellent book, which if read by all, would make a huge difference to many peoples lives.

Every teacher and parent of an ASD child should own this!
This is such an easy to read, well written and set out book, that supplies all the info any new teacher or parent of a child recently diagnosed with ASD needs to know! I have two boys with Autism spectrum disorders and will continue to buy copies of this book for their new teachers each year as it has all the main info in a succinct easy to understand form for busy teachers. I have also been fortunate enough to meet the author developmental pediatrician, Dr Paul Taylor and he is not only a fantastic author and extremely knowledgeable about this area, but is also a person who really cares about making the lives of children with ASD the best the can possibly be. A true champion for these wonderful children who with understanding can really shine as the beautifully different little wonders they are!

An excellent book, short chapters, quick to read, very clear, gives a real insight into how people on the Autistic spectrum differ from the rest of the population. What it doesn’t do (and doesn’t try to do, it was written by a professional as a first book to read for parents who have recently received a diagnosis for their child and need an introduction to ASD) is help you decide if someone is on the spectrum or have detailed strategies for coping with living with ASD.

This book is excellent and – writing as one who has recently been told I have Asperger’s Syndrome – expressed much of what I would like to say to Neuro-Typical people who take me the wrong way or do not understand where I am coming from. The more I read about the condition, frequently I’d have to pause reading each page because tears would blind my eyes – tears of relief at that – because those who have written about AS ,like Paul G. Taylor, have helped me not only to come to terms with the fact I have had this disability all my life but that I’m not alone, I’m not ”weird” and there are people out there who understand and that, with help and support and understanding, the rest of your life can be made more manageable.
