Nella Z –
Interesting concept for assistive utensils
I got this set of assistive utensils for a friend who has Parkinson’s disease. She is starting to have problems feeding herself and wanted to remain independent as long as possible. We think these utensils will help with that. She likes the adjustable strap that fits over her hand. It does help steady her grip.We encountered a couple of problems with the adjustable feature of the ends. The mechanism that allows the spoon and fork to be adjusted to different angles is also the part that separates from the handle allowing rice to be added for extra weight. The spoon and fork ends move too easily and are having to be readjusted often during a meal. Those adjustable ends also allow liquids to enter the hollow handle, so the utensils have to be placed in the dishwasher with the spoon and fork pointed down. A little bit of water still gets in, so if rice is added, handwashing only. Another slight problem is the size of the spoon. It is twice the size of a regular tablespoon and is just too large for a smaller mouth. The fork is okay, being the same size as a usual fork. So, all in all, we like the handles and the size of the fork and can work with the too easy movement.
