My Dad and I learned about caregiving when we took care of my Mother as she progressed through each stage of ALS. I kept a journal of each situation and phase that she went through and wrote my first book, “A Beautiful Smile” within a year of her death. This second book, “A Caregivers Guide & Journal” will guide you through the day to day needs of a patient with ALS, as well as the caregiver’s feeling and needs. The information provided along the way will be invaluable as you learn about the disease and how it affects each part of the body; where to ask for help, how to get the help needed and how to care for the patient and/or caregiver.

This book is specific to the caregiver of ALS but will also be helpful for any situation pertaining to caregiving. The information in this book is first-hand knowledge of the caregiver’s responsibilities, struggles, challenges, love and gratitude for someone taking over as a caregiver. The helpful information will give insight to: What ALS means, How to keep a journal, what to expect, how to inform the family, disability, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, Hospice, how to get the help you need, how to care for and comfort the patient. How to care for yourself.

My wish is that you will learn about the disease and that the information will help you care for the one you love, and help you understand what you will go through as a caregiver. Take your time with the ones you love, cherish every minute, love them with all your heart and care for yourself along the way.

    Thankful for this guide…
I am at the beginning of dealing with my dad’s ALS diagnosis. At this point he is still doing everything he always has besides being very fatigued and speech difficulties. This book has helped take a little bit of the “scariness” out of the unknown of this disease, although I am still very scared of what’s to come. I appreciate all of the information on where to look and get help. Although this disease progresses differently for each person, having the steps of the authors family member progression will be helpful for me on what to be on the lookout for.

    ALS Guide
Sandy has shared one of her greatest gifts with us; an experience like no other, the experience of sharing the most intimate time of life of one you love. Thank you Sandra for teaching us not only how to care compassionately, but more importantly, to take the time to be there. If you read Sandra’s works on ALS, both this guide and her earlier book “A Beautiful Smile, A Journey With My Mother” you will know how fortunate only a few selected people in this world are that get to share the death experience with a loved one. Sandra shows us how to be there and how to want to be there.

Lightly packed with easy-to-read information for non-professional caregivers
Sandra Donalds’ “ALS Caregivers Guide and Journal” is exactly what it says. Half of its 185 pages are empty blank spots for you to enter your own experiences and the other half are Donalds’ own experiences with ideas of what to watch for and how to assist your loved one during their journey through ALS. Lightly packed with easy-to-read information for non-professional caregivers.

    So Grateful for This Book
I chose this rating because of the way the author expressed the lived reality of being an ALS caregiver. She was thorough and honest through it all and yet tender too.I am a daily journal keeper, but my huband’ s diagnosis and changes left me unable to get my bearings and find words. Sandra Donald’s example and encouragement helped me return to what to me is a powerfulspiritual practice.

Any of this information is available on the als society site. It’s full of blank pages for you to write down different things but a notebook works much better. What caregivers really need to hear are how to deal with their own feelings and frustrations. Dealing with ALS and being a caretaker myself I have more need of insight into what to expect and how to deal with the emotional exhaustion, insomnia, irrational thoughts etc. The other useful info a caretaker book might need is where to get help when needed. There are a lot of grants people aren’t aware of to get money to pay for all the equipment. The ALS society is a great source for equipment as well. They lend anything from the lifts in the ceiling to the hospital bed and power chairs etc. I don’t recommend this book tho it’s inspired myself to maybe do my own.
