In this moving narrative of resilience and pure love, three mothers share their experiences and learnings about life alongside autism — From the creators of Finding Cooper’s Voice, What Color is Monday?, and Tales of an Educated Debutante

Kate Swenson, Adrian Wood and Carrie Cariello are from different parts of the country and backgrounds, but they were brought together by a singular experience: they are each a mother to a child with autism. Together they have shared laughter, tears, victories and the unconditional love that molds their lives.

Kate, Adrian and Carrie have children with very different autism profiles, and in Autism Out Loud they write about their unique experiences on a variety of topics, from diagnosis to caregiving, schooling and aging. Through their varied stories and lessons they’ve learned, these incredible women provide a glimpse of what to expect on the autism journey and show parents that they are not alone.

Written with honesty and heart, the stories within these pages serve as a reminder that even amid the storms of life, there is always hope and beauty to be found. A tribute to the unparalleled love of mothers, this inspiring book illuminates the joys, challenges and everyday miracles of life on the spectrum.

Recommend reading regardless if you can relate or not.
This book was recommended to me by my best friend who has a child with autism. It was recommended to her entire friend’s list, so not to just me directly, but I didn’t hesitate to buy it.I’m a single male with no children of my own, and this book is extremely eye-opening. It helped me truly realize what these mothers go through, including my friend, even though I haven’t personally witnessed the bad moments and the hard battles. I’ve only seen the moments that would make me believe nothing was wrong. I could never begin to know what it’s like to sacrifice one’s life to solely care for a child, let alone a child with special needs.I’d never pretend to know.So this book gave me a glimpse into the lives of three strangers and their families and it didn’t take long to be hooked. They told each of their life’s journey with so much honesty that it made me really feel for what they’ve been going through, and will forever continue to go through. It helped me understand my friend more, when I didn’t think that there was more to know. These women said they wish they had a manual or a book like this in the early stages when they were feeling lost and alone, and this book works for multiple audiences. Not only a parent in their situation, but literally anybody with a heart that has room to care and learn about something that doesn’t involve them directly.I know that I’ll take extra care when dealing with strangers in the world who maybe seem frustrating on the surface, but now being more considerate to the battles their waging on the inside or behind closed doors. I feel I always have, but even more so. It takes a lot for them to interact with the outside world, so the least I can do is be patient with them.I’m glad this book exists not only for the parent or guardian of a child with autism, but glad it exists for anyone who has a child or knows a child. This is truly a great resource in starting to understand what most of the world can’t see.Thank you to everyone involved in making this book a reality.

Must read for whole Autism Community and Not
I haven’t put the book down since I gotten the book. 📕 I to have been searching for a book about Autism I can relate with. This was truly the book. Thank you ladies for taking the time to share your experiences, struggles, and light through the everyday of Autism.Mikey was so happy to learn of Cooper ( Finding Cooper’s Voice), Amos and Jack. He was happy to know others struggle like him. He is only 3 1/2 and we have successfully about to graduate from ABA on June 20th. We are far from perfect and there will never be perfect. But y’all’s book has taught me that not perfect is ok, his life will have ups and downs. I will be there always to advocate along the way.I can’t thank yall enough for this book and finally a book that helps me know that life might be hard at times need to enjoy the light amongst it all. I have recommended your book to all the people i know that struggle like me. Later I will be making a post on my page to get the word out on the book. It is ok to say it out Autism Out Loud and make a support group of friends who understand the struggles of life with autism. ❤️🤗

    Yes buy it.
Wow I’m only a little over 100 pages in and I had to stop and write this. I can’t recommend this book enough! As a father with an autistic daughter ( different set of circumstances than the book), but still highly relatable in some area’s, gave me tidbits of information that was highly useful, particularly in the stories. There will be one sentence that just gets to me emotionally and will answer a question or quell a feeling I’ve had. It’s one of those books that I cannot stop reading, or will make time to read. It is so relatable along with other books I’ve read that deal specifically with girls who unfortunately for a long time were not believed to be able to have autism. Amazing. The chapter on anxiety was so much needed. It may not say it all but it sure said enough. Zero disappointment in buying this book-Quote:” Research tells us anxiety is an emotion, often characterized by inner turmoil, dread, and the expectation of a future event. It is not the same as fear, because fear is the response to a real, actual event. It eats him from the inside out. This is what research and science don’t tell you. They don’t explain the way anxiety is a fire that burns around the clock, demanding all the air in the room until you can hardly breath.”

    Just Read It!
I purchased this back in April and have purchased another for a special young teacher I know. If you do nothing else than purchase this book and read chapter 7 on grief, it’s worth its weight in gold x millions. The world needs to read this book for so many reasons. Read how 3 families from different backgrounds, different family dynamics and different life journeys with autism give readers permission to feel all the feels, express all the emotions and find joy in the midst of the loud trenches. Read about what the inside journey looks like, learn acceptance, learn kindness, learn to extend an authentic hello to everyone you meet. So well written. So worthy of making it to the NY bestsellers list. This will squeeze your heart in places you didn’t know existed.

This book is absolutely brilliant. It has all the things you need to know about autism. I do not have anyone in my life with autism but it is a subject that everyone needs to know about it, and this book describes it beautifully.

This book makes me feel seen and heard. It is the helping hand to lift me up when I have moments of grief. It is the listening ear to know that my experiences are understood. It is the loving heart that helps me continue to find the joy in my unexpected journey as a Mom. Thank you for writing your story so more of our kids can be accepted, valued and lifted up in this world.
