Compact, authoritative guide to effective diagnosis and empirically supported treatments for autism spectrum disorder.

This addition to the Advances in Psychotherapy Evidence-Based Practice series is a straightforward yet authoritative guide to effective diagnosis and empirically supported treatments for autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

The book starts by reviewing DSM-5 and ICD-10 diagnostic criteria, current theories and models, and prevalence rates for ASD and related neurodevelopmental disorders. It explains the differences between the disorders and changes in criteria and names (such as Asperger s syndrome, childhood and atypical autism, pervasive developmental disorder, Rett s syndrome) over time. It then provides clear guidance on evaluation of ASD and comorbidities, with practical outlines and examples to guide practice.

The core of the book that follows is a clear description of current interventions and their empirical support, including psychosocial, pharmacological, educational, social skills, and complementary/alternative treatments. Clinical vignettes and marginal notes highlighting the key points help make it an easy-to-use resource, incorporating the latest scientific research, that is suitable for all mental health providers dealing with autism spectrum disorder.

With great respect to the person with autism
I actually haven’t yet read this book. But I am buying it. I am a psychotherapist and for the last several years I’ve been privileged to work with several people on the spectrum. I appreciate the other reviewer and their strong attitude that autism can not be cured. While I do agree with this, I have to say that in my own neurotypical psycho therapeutic experience I have seen people get much needed help. The brain functions may not be changed but I find many people on the spectrum very smart and able to learn how to bridge gaps and learn how to function much better in this world. Whether it is learning to read cues that show facial expressions or learn how to express their unique needs, these things as well as many others help enhance the quality of people’s lives. These are just a few examples. I say this with great confidence and experience. I so look forward to this book since there is so little written, I can use all the insight I can get.

    Don’t be fooled.
Autism isn’t treatable. It isn’t cureable, nor should it be. It’s just misunderstood by most people (including many so-called “experts”.)I’m #ActuallyAutistic and urging you, please don’t get your info from this or any book claiming we’re treatable… We aren’t!!!Want to know how to best help your Autistic child / friend? Ask an Autistic person… There’s scads of Autistic self-advocates on Facebook educating the public for free and calling for #AutismAcceptance.
