For autistic people who find themselves facing a criminal charge, understanding how the features of autism may have contributed to their behaviour can be vital context for their defence. In this insightful book, Nick Dubin explores how and why autistic people get caught up in the criminal justice system. He delves into what steps can be taken to prevent autistic people committing crimes and what should be done to ensure their fair and appropriate treatment if they are charged with a crime. It covers everything from prevention to the aftermath of sentencing, including available counselling and therapy.
Nick’s personal experience and meticulous research shows that criminal justice can be an oppressive system that misunderstands and stigmatizes autistic people, especially low-risk individuals and those with less criminal responsibility.

Critical Contribution on Intersection of Autism and Criminal Justice Reform.
This book is a must read for any relative of a person with autism and anyone who is involved with the criminal justice system in any way: police, attorneys, judges, corrections officers, psychologists, anyone making policy decisions and more. Nick Dubin’s book is thoroughly researched and he backs up ever claim. Most importantly, he not only clearly articulates the problems, he also offers solutions. He covers ways to prevent harm from ever occurring as well as ways to minimize the additional harm caused by our current procedures. He goes in depth into the topics in a way that readers can get a better picture of what’s really happening. This book should be required reading for all attorneys, psychologists and policymakers!

Excellent resource for every parent of a child with a developmental disability
This is the second book on this subject that I have purchased and read by this author. It is practical, insightful and brutally honest about how individuals with autism or other developmental disabilities find themselves involved with the criminal justice system. Frankly, there shouldn’t NEED to be a book on this subject, but, unfortunately, the criminal justice system hasn’t yet caught up with the reality of the need to decriminalize autism. Thank you, Nick, for providing a valuable resource. I will be donating this book to an autism resource in my area.

Excellent! Highly Recommend
This book is an absolute must read for anyone who is on the autism spectrum as well as those who love or works with an autistic person. Dr. Nick Dubin manages to make a very difficult topic easy to understand while being thoroughly and well researched at the same time. His written expression is a gift to us all. I highly recommend this book.
