The complete guide to connecting with adults on the autism spectrum – one of the 2021 Best Books on Autism from ChoosingTherapy.com

For a friend, family member, or coworker with autism, communication can be challenging. But Connecting with the Autism Spectrum can help you find common ground with expert tips and helpful insights about talking (and listening) to neurodiverse adults so you can make your interactions more transparent, meaningful, and rewarding for all.

Written by Casey Vormer, a self-taught artist and autism advocate, this comprehensive guide is a trusted source for understanding neurodiversity that features a brief introduction to the autism spectrum. It also provides easy communication strategies like active listening and positive encouragement as well as steps to avoid misunderstandings by teaching how to recognize biases and correct them. Additionally, you’ll learn why the term “high functioning autism” is a misnomer to define members of this vibrant community.

“It’s important to look at every autistic person individually and recognize their obstacles―but more importantly, we should acknowledge their skills and avoid labeling them with ‘high functioning autism’ or ‘low functioning autism’ altogether,” Vormer says.

Unlike other autism books, Connecting with the Autism Spectrum delivers:

An easy approach―Discover the best ways to communicate with those living with autism.Situational success―Find the right information for various situations and settings, including school, work, and social relationships.A sensitive tone―Get valuable information from a clear, honest point of view that does not seek to “cure” or manipulate people.

Learn how to communicate better with those on the autism spectrum with this informative book.

    Excellent, highly informative and helpful
This book is clearly written and highly informative. Helped me understand my teen daughter after she was diagnosed with Autism, and myself better too as a highly sensitive introvert, and has significantly improved our family communication. I have recommended to my therapy clients. Anyone that has, or knows or loves someone with any kind of neurodiversity (Highly Sensitive, ADHD, Aspberger’s, Autism) could benefit from reading this. Knowledge is power and this improved our quality of life and relationships. It’s on my shelf of go to sources for reference and plan to re-read as time has passed since I first read it.

    V. Good
I wanted books to increase my understanding to autism so I know to deal better with my son. The book was a window opened by an autistic person allowing us to see his own world. The only issue is there is no much about advices for dealing with a younger age.Easy language and good print.

    Excellant
Written in simple words by the person who went through this problem i.e. autism.I gifted it to my neighbour who has a child with autism. It was very helpful to improve his social behavior. His parents are happy that they understand the problems of their child in more depth and more correctly.

I will be ordering more copies to share with friends
I’ve been looking for an affordable book that will help my friends and coworkers interact with me more easily, and that’s exactly what Remrov achieves in this how-to guide full of stories and examples from his life. With just over 100 pages, large font, an accessible writing style, great visual design, and stand-alone sections for coworkers, teachers, and friends, this book is well set up to help others better understand and connect with autistic people after just a few minutes of reading. One thing I love about the book is the way the author remains descriptive and emphasizes that all autistic people are different. Other books on autism seem to unintentionally drift into a prescriptive mode of treating all autistic people as the same for certain areas of life, but Remrov avoids this fallacy. He highlights potential struggles and strengths of autistic people without making it seem that we must have these characteristics in order to be “properly autistic.”As an autistic person who is verbally gifted, others often perceive me as being highly functional, which is not always a good thing when I need to ask for help with simple tasks. This book has given me some great tools to describe my struggles in practical ways that make sense. Whether you’re autistic or are somebody wanting to understand an autistic person in your life, I very highly recommend this read.

    Okay
There is many good points in this book. The information can be dense and overwhelming at times. There is mentions of Autistic social issues etc and the authors opinions on them some I agree with some, others not, but I guess this proves everyone on the spectrum has different beliefs on what helps and what not.Anyways politics aside, this book describes things not to say to someone on the spectrum, teach you about stims, ableism, etc. I would recommend this book if you want terminology and want a perspective from an autistic writer not just someone who writes from the outside. This book has some information dense points for me but I enjoyed the read, I understand people have different opinions and that’s okay, do I agree? No. But being listening to someone else side is always insightful, I’m not against changing my mind if the arguments just.Overall I think this book is more good then bad. 3/5 I recommend giving this to someone who is new to the spectrum and learning about themselves, or giving this book to someone you love to teach them about your experience on the spectrum and highlight the parts that resonate with you. This book is good because it’s the voice of someone with autism, it’s not like those mom books. If that isn’t a seller then the information u get will be for sure very detailed, you’ll definitely learn a lot.

Disappointed! Unusually big letter size and too superficial. If you watch 3 youtube-videos about autism, you know all that is covered in this book. Read it in less than 2 hours. Do not recommend. Do read: Unmasking Autism by Devon Price.
