Maerilo –
I know it’s weird to say this about a handle, but this thing is honestly beautiful.
My parents are elderly and my dad has a progressing neurological disorder that makes him unsteady, so I’ve been worried for a long time about them using the bathroom in the middle of the night. Statistically speaking it’s an incident waiting to happen, and they’re too stubborn (or considerate of one another) to turn on a light, so I’ve been counting the days they’ve been lucky and haven’t had a midnight fall. When I saw this was available, I leapt on it and I COULD NOT BE MORE PLEASED WITH THIS.First off the price is *great* considering what this type of handle usually goes for locally, and if you’re willing to find the studs and do the installation yourself, you save a bundle from a contractor coming in. The bar is solid, feels sturdy and looks professional. It reminds me (in a good way) of the soft lights your see by the stairs in a movie theatre aisle, which is a nice vibe, and the lights themselves are demure enough that they don’t blast your pupils when you walk by it at night. I was worried that it might be a little too intrusive if it lit up every single time someone walked by it, but fortunately it turns out that the sensor is smart enough to sense daylight and stays off unless you have it in a particularly shadowy location. My parents’ room is at the end of a hallway that branches off into a guest bedroom and their bathroom, and because of that windowless placement, it tends to get darker faster than other places in the house. We’ve been finding it very helpful that it lights up more frequently in that space, but if that’s something that might potentially annoy you, I’d suggest setting it atop a surface as near as possible to where you’re thinking about putting it in before you actually install it, then monitoring how many times it flickers on and off during the day. For our purposes, the sensitivity was perfect.Installation is simple in theory, but not everyone has a working knowledge Re: studs/drywall load/electrical wire placement in their house, and to that effect I’d say the instructions could use a little more specificity. Don’t install it in drywall even with the drywall anchors, it is much safer to anchor it between two studs even if you have angle the unit of a bit to achieve that. Once installed correctly, the thing doesn’t budge. Solid as a rock.As far as grip goes… it’s a smooth metal by aesthetic design so I can’t speak one way or another about that other than to say that it feels substantial under your grip. I feel safe and I also earnestly trust that my parents are safer with it there. If you’re worried at all about slipping, just wind a self-adhesive strip of soft velcro around it to give it more friction in the middle. My dad’s grip is pretty slippery at this point with old calluses and he does just fine. This thing seriously is so pretty. Just the fact that it lights up automatically is like 80% of my delight, but the handle itself looks so classy in that space and best of all, helps them both safely navigate that midnight turn into their bathroom. Could not recommend this enough, truly. I might end up getting more for other places in the house.

Remember the batteries!
This is a necessity in a home with elderly, disabled, or any other individuals prone to possible slip and falls. It is a nice feature for others as well and looks nice in the bathroom. Although it can be used in a tub/shower, i am using it beside the toilet and in the wood and drywall regular wall, it is a snap to get installed. It seems very sturdy at the largest weight in our home which is about 180 lb.The 16 inch size is large enough to be used for its purpose but not so large as to take up much excess space. The LED light is automatic and is an outstanding safety feature here.My only reason for rating at 4 stars rather than 5 is the length of time the light stays on. Without movement, the light will go off on its own after 20 seconds. It would be nice if this could be set for a longer length of time or just automatically stay on for at least one minute. It is a great value for the money and also FSA eligible for those who can take advantage of that. I would recommend this item.

Sturdy
Heavy duty and sturdy. Nice option when there is no grab bar pre-installed. The light may be redundant but it’s a helpful tool I guess.
