Explaining HD to Kids
My family has members with HD. This book is very clear about the different aspects of HD. It includes the fact that there can still be lots of love. Excellent book.

Very well written.
I think this book could really help children understand why Grandma’s body has movement that they don’t have. And it also helped me understand Hunnington’s Disease better!

Barely scratches the surface
While sweet, this is not a very realistic portrayal of families living with HD. Most are dealing with physical, mental, and financial challenges. The person with HD is usually very ill, requiring lots of care, and most families don’t have a nurse or caregiver to help. Each child of the affected parent has a 50% chance of inheriting the disease, so either Mom or Dad is also at risk and may already know his/her genetic status, and if positive, is facing not being able to work, becoming totally dependent on others, and, eventually death, since there’s no cure. Yes, there’s still lots of love, but there are lots of difficulties to navigate that can be very hard for a child growing up in a home with HD.
