Hearing loss doesn’t come with an operating manual―until now.

If you have hearing loss, you already know that the conventional approach to treatment is focused on hearing-aid technology. Without a handbook to help you figure out how to actually live with it, you’ve likely been getting by on information pieced together from various sources―and yet, communication often seems incomplete and unsatisfying.

What’s missing from this hearing care model is the big picture―a real-life illustration of how hearing loss, its emotions, and its barriers affect every corner of your life. Now, hearing-health advocates, consultants, and speakers Shari Eberts and Gael Hannan offer a new skills-based approach to hearing loss that is centered not on hearing better, but on communicating better.

With honesty and humor, they share their own hearing loss journeys, and outline invaluable insights, strategies, and workarounds to help you engage with the world and be heard. You’ll gain tips for navigating all areas impacted by hearing loss, including relationships, work, technology; strategies for adopting a new, empowering mindset towards your hearing loss; and communication behaviors that can make almost any listening situation manageable.

Informed by the lived experiences of thousands of people living with hearing loss, and corroborated by hearing science, technological advances, and modern hearing-care principles, Hear & Beyond offers a new way forward to greater connection and engagement―whether you’re new to hearing loss or have been living with it for a long time.

Hearing loss is just one aspect of who you are, among many others. You may have hearing loss, but it doesn’t have to have you.

An important book that addresses the whole person
Shari Eberts and Gael Hannan have written an important book that addresses the whole person. I am a bilateral cochlear implant recipient with a large selection of books on hearing loss and decided to explore this book. Reading this book is like sitting down with two new friends who will serve as mentors as you enter your journey on the road to hearing loss. They understand the fear and grief associated with morphing into this new identity. The challenges, disappointments and most important the solutions. Common terms and phrases are explained in simple terms to the reader, so they can benefit from the information that follows and become their own advocate. It’s all there. I appreciated Shari’s candid stories about her experiences, and just when I was getting all teary remembering some of my own, Gael shook me back with her wit in humor. I thought to myself, I am this woman. Both of them. It is totally relatable. One of the most important aspects of this book is the topic of mind shifts. Once the journey begins, it isn’t just about problems. It’s about solutions. This book is about solutions and living well as a whole person.

provides valuable information for those with nhbaring loss
In addition to very practical suggestions and information, it described the stages that someone going through hearing loss experiences very accurately. It helps one “take charge” of their hearing loss and create their best solutions. It is also valuable for your spouse or other close friends/relatives so they can help by adjusting their own behavior. It is divided into sections for easy reference. some can be skipped depending on your circumstances. It definitely helped both me and my husband adapt.

Know someone with hearing loss? Get this book.
Almost everyone either has hearing loss or knows someone who does. Both groups need a user manual. There are very few medical treatments for hearing loss, so it gets addressed with a mix of technology, self-advocacy, and a grab-bag of hacks for specific situations.“Hear & Beyond” is a comprehensive guide to all of that. It is full of practical advice on every page. The authors speak from lived experience and write in a down-to-earth, informative, and engaging style. While reading, I found myself thinking, “Wow! This chapter alone is worth the price of the book!” And then I thought the same about the next chapter, and the next one, …The book is information-dense, but an easy read (and often quite funny!). I’m buying copies for friends and family.

    A life changing experience
Clear, organized, helpful for the HOH person and his/her communication partners, family…a survival guide to help one navigate the challenges of a HOH person and common sense coping strategies.. a primer that cuts across all levels of impairment. I’ve waited for a book like this for over 30 years. Living in denial and shame for the most part. I started on my own path of self advocacy , several years ago and this book has upped my game considerably. People treat me differently , because I’m different. I’m so grateful to Shari and Gael, who use compassion, education and humor, to help those of us who have lived in isolation and shame . Kudos to them both… this work is a masterpiece. From a very grateful reader.

    Hearing loss tribulations of life
Enjoyed how Gael and Shari calliberated and expressed their personal journeys. While reading this book a volume 2 is in order. Reflections on the enchantiing and disenchanting times when hearing loss can be referred to as life’s trials and tribulations. Let’s touch on the lives of people profoundly deaf with no hearing capability. Hear and Beyond was written in layman terms for anyone to comprehend without experiencing the true sensory disability. A wonderful teaching tool for hearing people and great book for those with hearing loss who think they are alone.

Questions about hearing loss? You need to read this book.
Gael Hannan and Shari Eberts have written a landmark book on hearing loss. Hearing and Beyond captures all the important advice, arranges it in an easily digestible format, and adds the keen and light-hearted insights of two people who, as we do, both have hearing loss. This is a book we can hand to new Hearing Loss Association chapter members or just new acquaintances, as well as our caregivers and anyone who wants to learn more about what our hearing loss journeys are like. Their book ties together in one place and expands on the many key points and essential information. And it’s an easy read about a difficult and complex topic. Gael and Shari share their extensive personal experience and insights to help us communicate better and live better with hearing loss. As their book cover says, we now have an operating manual for hearing loss. Thank you Gael and Shari!

The Ultimate Guide to Living with Hearing Loss is Not and Exaggeration
It is not an exaggeration by any means that Hear & Beyond, is “The ultimate survival guide to living well with hearing loss.”With an estimated 43 million Americans living with hearing loss, I can only hope that Shari Eberts and Gael Kennedy Hannan can sell that many copies.Having lived with a hearing loss and deafness for decades before receiving cochlear implants, I wish I had this amazing source book during that time.If you, a loved one, a parent, a sibling, a friend or a neighbor is suffering from any degree of hearing loss, and I don’t say this lightly, run, don’t walk, and GET THIS BOOK for yourself or others. It will save years or decades of frustration, trial and error and even a decline into isolation that is the fate of almost everyone with a hearing loss.Shari and Gael, THANK YOU for producing this fantastic source book. My hat is off to both of you.

Good book for those new to hearing loss
This is a good book for those who lose their hearing later in life as it provides guidelines and tips on how to cope and adapt to the new hearing situation. For those who grew up with hearing loss, this book isn’t the best book to buy as it doesn’t provide much detail on how to assist teens or young adults struggling with hearing loss and how they can enter the world. The author’s share their own experiences with hearing loss and that can be a valuable piece to read. Otherwise, not the best book on this topic that I’ve read.

Thanks so much, Authors, for bringing this book to this world. It really helped me not feel isolated anymore and also join in hearing loss groups where we can openly discuss our problems related to hearing loss and gain insights as well as also get suggestions how to manage better.

A fabulous easy to read book that guides the reader in what living with a hearing loss is really like.As a Doctor of Audiology myself, who has treated thousands of patients over the past 18 years, and as someone who also lost all their hearing as an adult and ended up with 2 cochlear implants, I will recommend this book to anyone touched by hearing loss.Hear & Beyond can be used in so many ways, to educate family and friends, as a guide for colleagues in the workplace, as support for someone starting their hearing treatment journey, or for a person who has experienced hearing loss for many year’s. Fantastic book!

I bought this book because I am a speaker in the Federal Government and I often speak about hearing loss because I am deafened. I bought this book because I knew Gael covers all the nuances of hearing loss. She speaks so eloquently and easily gets her message across with tact. I want to emulate her and learn the things I may not know about hearing loss and Deaf Culture.

I’m still struggling to get into this book. It’s very American, whilst I can tolerate American novels this is heavy going.

I feel deeply grateful to Shari and Gael for this book, it echo’d my experience in so many ways. I didn’t even know what I did had a name, for instance, speech reading.Growing up with hearing loss has been quite difficult. The audiologist gives you a hearing aid, that was the extent to the support. I had a worker from audiology liaise with school and all that was in place was for me to sit at the front. I hated it at the time as everyone was behind me and could therefore see my hearing aid- I was already being bullied for other things. My family never acknowledged it nor made any adjustments.I have only just started with self advocacy. I never even knew I had a voice until a year ago, when Uni asked what I needed, which threw me a bit because nobody has ever asked me that before.I realise I have a long way to go with self advocacy and this book has helped me to understand my communication partners needs better. This book is US based and therefore is centred on hearing care over there, so a lot wasn’t relevant but I found it really interesting to see the differences. So with the NHS here, it’s just, here’s the latest (often quite out of date) model of whatever brand we use. So I just get what I am given, but it works well enough. It also made me laugh a lot, great sense of humour. Finally, it’s worthwhile getting this book. We need more of this!
