Keep On, Keeping On: Cerebral Palsy: It is what it is
$10.01
Matt is a footie loving, left-wing, antifascist who loves causing a little bit of chaos. Born with Cerebral Palsy, Matt is a proud disabled man with a story to tell. This is not a story of pity and tragedy, nor misplaced inspiration. It is the raw, honest and real story of what it means to grow up as a disabled person – through every high and every low. A story that has been untold for too long, until now… this is Matt’s time.
“One of the reasons I wanted to write this book was to show people what it’s like to live with a disability – the highs and the lows. I wanted to be real about the challenges and struggles that I’ve faced but I also wanted to show that life with a disability can be fantastic. Having a disability, having CP, has made me who I am, but it’s not everything I am.”

This is a profoundly candid story of the life of someone with Cerebral Palsy, perhaps one that most of us have never experienced. It is humorous, tear-jerking and incredibly insightful. The sincerity and sheer determination that pours out of Matt in his writing is all too evident. It’s an easy read, well-written and a book that should be read by everyone. It certainly humbled me. It also left me feeling privileged that Matt took the decision to Keep On, Keeping On as it gives all readers a unique opportunity to see inside a life with a disability. He comes across as an exceptionally able human being and I really hope there are more books to come!

Matt Stabb’s short, thoughtful, anecdotal book is an enjoyable read that touches on the realities of living with Cerebral Palsy (CP). It casts a light on two key elements of his life; the significance to him of personal relationships and desire to ‘belong’ to a place and group but also his refusal to let his condition dictate who he is and how he is treated by others.Matt touches on the social and physical challenges he faces navigating a world made principally for able bodied people. Everything in his life, from getting up, going to a club, taking public transport or receiving the support he is due, seems a time consuming struggle which is something most of us don’t have to face. Matt hints at these in this gem of a book, leaving much hidden behind a self deprecating sense of humour. He never lets his challenges overwhelm him although it would have been easy to write a moanfest pointing to the unfairness of it all. But Matt didn’t need to do that to get his point across. He just keeps on keeping on as he expresses so well in this book. This is a very personal story of the challenges Matt faces. Whilst there must be so much more he could say, these anecdotes shout from the rooftops that Matt will not be walked over by anyone. His humour and thirst for life are too evident for that. Matt Stabb has a clear moral compass but only touches on his activism and politics. These deserve expanding in a Part II, that hopefully he will decide to write. Required reading for anyone who seeks to understand how to approach life with CP.

This was a great book. The book manages to explore the highs and lows of life while retaining a good sense of humour throughout. It also provides a fascinating insight to some of the challenges those with a physical disability may face and some of the some of the joys.
