dext | Get a Grip

Designing and manufacturing products that simplify the daily challenges faced by people with poor dexterity and low grip strength.

How did we get our start?

Geoff designed the Keywing key turner to help his Dad, which won the Design Council UK Spark Award and £65,000 of funding from charity Versus Arthritis.

Where are you based?

Geoff and Alan design and test all dext products in their home town of Brisbane, Australia. All manufacturing is undertaken in the United Kingdom, which ensures a high level of quality and consistency.

Are our products high quality?

Dext products are manufactured in the United Kingdom in accordance with quality control & safety standards to ensure we deliver high quality products to customers.

After witnessing my father struggling with his keys and unable to open his shed, I set out to create a solution.

That product was the Keywing key turner, which won the Design Council UK Spark Award, Good Design Award and £65,000 of funding from charity Versus Arthritis.

The success of the Keywing was the spark that fuelled me to establish dext and design more products that solve the daily challenges faced by people with poor dexterity.

TURN KEYS WITH EASE – When in place the Keywing key turner creates a key cover cap ‘thumb turn’ and provides extra leverage so that far less strength is required to hold and turn a key, helping to reduce hand pain.
FIND KEYS WITH EASE – The range of attractive, vibrant colours for your house keys remove the frustration of guessing ‘which key is which’ and makes them easy to find and identify.
GRIP KEYS WITH EASE – The comfortable dimpled domes give fingers a firm grip to stop you fumbling & dropping keys. The nylon body provides a ‘warm’ touch point for cold fingers.
USE KEYS WITH EASE – Comfortable grip increases control and safety. The Keywing slides in and out of pockets effortlessly thanks to the slim, light-weight, award winning design. The triple pack makes a fantastic gift for anyone, especially Grandma, Grandpa, Mum or Dad.
Note: The Keywing is suitable for flat ‘yale’ style / cylinder rim lock house keys. Not suitable for mortice lock / chubb keys or car keys.

Takes the pain out of turning a key
Works so well! I have RA and my hands hurt most of the time. Make it easy to hold and turn the house key

Great for arthritis. Be careful when assembling.
I’m amazed at how easy this makes unlocking my house door. The house shifted and the lock got almost impossible for me to lock and unlock, until I tried this key turner. I have severe CMC (base of thumb) arthritis so the key turner will help preserve what function I still have left. A word of caution: when pulling the clips outward to release the internal tray, don’t pull too hard. I think my husband and I pulled the clips too far out because once the key was put in and the tray reinserted, it kept coming apart. We threw that one away and tried again with another one. My husband gently pulled on the clips while I pushed the tray out. We attached the key, reinserted the tray and key, and this time it all stayed together. We assume we broke the first one. Many reviewers mention that the plastic comes apart and the key falls out. I’m wondering if they broke the clips. It’s not obvious until the key keeps falling out.

    Good, but not perfect
This helps my mother with her key but the adhesive isn’t strong enough so the key moves around. It’s a good idea that needs to be refined.

If your looking here, you know you need this! Amazing!
I was looking for something to help open the door, as any key and my arthritis didn’t communicate well! I saw these and thought $15?. but it broke it down to five dollars apiece, and I could always send it back if it didn’t work.I put it on my keys the day it arrived. My husband was a bit grumbly so I said don’t use it use your key. We have a special needs adult son who goes in and out of our door and does not remember to shut it. So we thought this was a good way when we’re outside to keep him outside with us, or inside with us, not going outside silly willie. Big safety issue solved! Even my husband said that’s a pretty smart idea and it works good. I really hear the word good come out of his mouth, so I knew this was a keeper.Takes so little effort to open the door, my hands don’t complain my wrist is good, I have pretty severe osteoarthritis in my hands, and rheumatoid arthritis all over. I wish I had known about this product 10 years earlier. I’m ordering three sets for friends of mine at our arthritis group, and I’m sure they will also pass it on!If you’re hesitating don’t! If you’re looking at this kind of product, you already know that you need help. Press the button, and just buy it, you will be happy you did!

Used to be great, Redesign is seriously lacking.
I have had a pack of the original design of these for ages, and loaned out a couple so I was wanting to get more.I don’t know what happened, but at some point the design for these changed and the new design is frankly awful. The old design was a clamshell style, where the turner popped open like a book with a hinge on the other side. The new design is bulkier, and also has a significantly problematic closure, which I could best describe as more of a buckle? It requires pinching/aligning, etc without any real grip for the interior part. It took me quite a bit to get the thing open, and the key slides around, so I have to pull on the insert able part of the key to get it to stick out enough to properly go into the lock. Not a fan of the redesign at all, I’m going to start looking for other brand options for this type of aid, as the new design just isn’t working out for me.

    THESE “KEY TURNERS” SUCK!!!
I put these on my keys for my apartment door and outside security door. I was very careful on putting my key in the compartment which holds the key. Upon my first try to lock my apartment door, the handle of the door would not lock and the key almost broke off. Now my door knob is not working properly. Fortunately, I have a dead bolt! I didn’t even try it on the outside security door for fear of harming that as well. DO NOT BUT THESE. THEY DO NOT WORK!!!!

It really helps when Im rushing to open the door.
I used it to mark my most important keys. It really helps when you have several that look alike.

This product is wonderful for my father who has difficulty with his hands. It makes it much easier for him to access the required keys on his key ring and to grasp the key to turn in the lock. Great for anyone with hands that cannot grasp easily.

Mi padre tiene una enfermedad y va perdiendo fuerza en las manos. Como la puerta de casa está muy dura esto le ayuda a poder abrirla con mucha más facilidad.

I’ve been looking for something like this for a while. I’ve searched through so many specialty, disability, therapy and medical supply webshops but all I could find was the extender type key help which, due to my medical condition, I couldn’t use. This one is exactly what I needed. Now I am able to open the door independently. My therapist was surprised to hear that I found it here on Amazon. This is truly a godsend.

I’ve used this product for a month now, every day, and it functions perfectly. The instructions for inserting your key into the gripping device are on the packet, very simple and very quick to do (there are 3 Schluesseldrehhilfen in the packet, very good value). This gadget easily opens the door, it requires no additional effort or pressure on the user’s part. Although still early days, it seems firm, yet light, and a great physical relief.
