The completely updated and expanded new edition of this well-established text incorporates DSM-5 changes as well as other new developments. The all-in-one guide covers the whole range of often co-existing neuro-behavioral disorders in children – from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, and anxiety, to autism spectrum disorders, nonverbal learning disabilities, Tourette’s, sensory integration problems, and executive dysfunction. A completely revised chapter on the autism spectrum by Tony Attwood explains not only new understanding in the field, but the new diagnostic criteria, and the anticipated usage of the term ‘Asperger’s Syndrome’. Dr. Kutscher provides accessible information on causes, symptoms, interactions with other conditions, and treatments. He presents effective behavioral strategies for responding to children who display traits of these disorders – whether at home, at school, or in other settings – along with case vignettes and practical tips. Finally, a chapter on the role of medications summarizes current knowledge. The author’s sympathetic yet upbeat approach and skillful explanations of the inner world of children in the syndrome mix make this an invaluable companion for parents, teachers, professionals, and anyone else who needs fast and to-the-point advice on children with special needs.

    Author gets it!
Extremely relevant to our direct experiences, this book provides information on other diagnoses which have a 70% chance of co-occurrence with each other. (Meaning if your child was diagnosed with adhd (spd, asd, Tourette’s, etc) or even MISdiagnosed with one of the disorders in ‘The Mix’, they have a 70% chance of having 1orMore of the other diagnoses. They have a 90% chance of having 1orMore of what the author refers to as ‘shadow syndromes’ meaning they have the symptoms but are not severe enough to warrant a full formal diagnosis- that doesn’t mean they don’t have the disability, or that it isn’t causing problems, on the contrary the author emphasizes recognizing the symptoms which require intervention, rather than concentrating on any specific title (diagnoses). By focusing on the ‘big picture’ and providing REAL, PRACTICAL advice and solutions, which can be used IMMEDIATELY, this book helps you help your family, right now. There is a lot I already knew in here, but even that information written/said so straightforwardly was a refreshing validation of what we and other families truly experience every single day. There was also a LOT of new information, and some of the statistics included really made me stop to think about what a future with these diagnoses will look like, and how we can change that future for the better.Im also reading another book by the same author called Living Without Brakes (titled for ADHD-but like this book, Living Without Brakes covers multiple diagnoses in ‘The Mix). I believe both of these books should be required reading for every parent, teacher, social worker, therapist, and doctor involved with any child who has, or is suspected to have, ANY of the diagnoses included in The Syndrome Mix.

    Life Changing
This book is amazing. It is so very educational as to the different ways syndromes can present. I had no idea that so many habits/tendencies could fall under one syndrome. It has really opened my eyes to the broadness of categories such as ADHD. This book has saved my son. He did not present at all as the stereo typical ADHD kid (but we found him in this book). After reading this we actually made a zoom appointment with Dr. Kutscher (the author) and my son is enjoying school for the first time in 5 years. Life changing!

Great book for understanding some of the most common diagnoses …
Great book for understanding some of the most common diagnoses facing kids today and written in a language designed for teaching parents and professionals empathy toward their child, student or patient’s point of view, standing in his or her shoes. Who knew that most kids with ADHD may not only struggle with inattention or behavioral issues, but low self esteem and insecurity at not being able to keep up with their peers. The book gives many practicals and encourages parents, teachers and professionals to advocate for their unique child or student and coaches through the frustrations too. A great go to reference for all caregivers and professionals.

Really good book for parents and teachers
Such a good book for parents and teachers of kids who may have extra challenges. Written with compassion and it’s easy to read for the average person. Don’t need a PhD or M.D. degree to understand it.I even wrote down a few quotes to remember.

    Read it for awareness!!
I absolutely love this book! It has given so much peace and clarity as a mother of children in the syndrome mix and also as an educator. This book clearly gives specifics for accommodations for the child and peace for the care giver. It goes in to clear detail without being overwhelming. I would urge everyone to read this book even if be for the sake awareness of awareness alone!

Finally a medical doctor it seems understands that a single simple diagnosis does not fit the multitude of behaviors a child presents on the street or in the home that unfortunately are not seen during the 15 minutes afforded the child in the doctor’s office where the first off the cuff diagnosis is given along with a ritalin prescription for the suffering parent. .It is nice to see a book by an author who recognizes that children with special needs often do not have a single disorder but have several concurrent disorders all working together to make a parents life miserable. The insights, strategies and recognition that each child has a unique variant of special needs are most helpful and as the book was read the word yes continually was uttered aloud as proof that finally there was a medical doctor who really get’s it.With a library full of these titles this one goes to the front of the select group that is truly a reference and self help therapy book for the parent or caregiver who deals with that difficult child 24/7.As a skeptic of the medical field whose only solution seems to be a prescription for ritalin, this book gives hope for the few of us who know that drugging a child often is done to save the sanity of the parent or caregiver with little benefit to a child who needs love and support that is so hard to give on those difficult days.

This is a brilliant book! It split into chapters so you can go straight there. It is notebook unattainable to read from cover to cover to find what you are looking for. Not only is it ideal for parents but also professionals. In places it even raised a smile. Having the chapters broken down makes it easier and simpler as does the tone of the book. For exams at the end of chapter 3 the author puts “It’s going to be quite a ride. Let’s celebrate the participants along the way!”
