Navigating Life with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis provides accessible, comprehensive, and up-to-date information about the challenges patients, family members, and caregivers face when confronted by ALS, a disease that affects approximately 5,600 Americans every year, with as many as 30,000 people managing the disease at any given time. ALS is a difficult disease for the patient and is also challenging for the caregiver and family as there are many questions, issues relating to care, and problems to manage. This guide covers all aspects of managing ALS, from the onset of symptoms, diagnosis, treatments, and coping strategies, to the use of home health care or hospice, and new research in the field. The book also sheds lights on difficult topics, such as end-of-life care and managing legal affairs.
Navigating Life with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is unique because it covers two perspectives: one author is a neurologist with 30 years of experience treating ALS patients, and the other author experienced first-hand the issues in providing care for a parent with ALS. Formatted in a question-and-answer style, peppered throughout with patient stories, and with sections devoted to family members and caregivers, this compassionate resource provides guidance to those seeking to understand how to live with this disease.

Very informative
A “need to read” whether or not you know someone with ALS.More people need to know what a person with ALS goes through!

Right on the mark
Good and appropriate for a cousin with this heart wrenching disease.

Great for those who don’t want too much medical jargon thrown at them.
My mom was diagnosed last month and I had a hard time making sense of her condition. I read some stuff online but got lost in the medical jargon. This book is very easy to understand and I like that it has four different stories from people who struggled with ALS. I’m only on chapter six but I understand more without feeling too out of control of the situation. I recommend this book for anyone with a loved one who has ALS or someone who has ALS themselves.

An excellent book on ALS.
One of the best books on ALS. As the spouse and full time caregiver of someone with ALS for 1 1/2 years now, my husband has experienced so much of what’s presented and it explained much of what’s to be expected in the future. ALS is different for every person and so is their progression. This book covers everything.

I would recommend it for someone just learning about the disease as …
I am the spouse of a person living with ALS. I purchased this thinking it was an in depth look at living with he disease. After dealing with this disease for over 2 years, I did not find any new information, I would recommend it for someone just learning about the disease as it appears to have very general information and a good source to familiarize one with the many facets of the disease.

Life is the key word
This serves as a glossary of terms and meanings with suggestions for life with ALS. For me, in the first stages of the disease, it gives me enough but not too much to cope with at one time.

Perfect for a scared, newly diagnosed person. Will probably refer friends and family to it when I share the news with them
