Customers say
Customers find the smart lock incredibly functional, particularly with HomeKit, and appreciate its well-made construction and sleek appearance. The installation process is straightforward with clear instructions, and they like the rechargeable battery feature, with one customer noting it hasn’t needed charging in over two months. While the integrated fingerprint reader is fast, customers have mixed opinions about the connectivity and speed.

A super fast lock that won’t let you down!
This is a very high quality lock and very impressive! You can tell the designers have a great pride in it. The brushed metal handle on it is a classy look! Having come from the August Lock which was getting old and tired, it’s a night and day difference. it’s super fast to lock and unlock and easy to install. They include the charger cord so you can charge the lock from an outlet near the door, or you can easily remove the lock and take it to your charging station. It’s a USB C cable to a magnetic connector. If you have a couch with USB ports near the door, you can brag to your friends that you are charging your lock with a couch! imagine telling someone in the past you could do that now! 🙂 About 2 hours later, you have a fully charged lock ready to last you about 6 months between charges. The connectivity is wonderfully easy to connect to the app and 2.4ghz WiFi network. I use Home Assistant which supports Matter devices and was able to get this connected with no problems. It is easily controlled over the Matter network which is insanely awesome! It will operate without Internet! Finally an IoT device not fully dependent on the WWW!Overall, this is a super impressive buy and great value! You can’t go wrong with it and it’s also certified by Home Assistant and is a great addition to their growing device lists.

Good option for Home Assistant (UPDATED TITLE: “Unprecedented Home/Family/Spouse Approval Factor”
Great smart lock, lots of connectivity options (Bluetooth, Wifi, Thread). Easy to retrofit over the existing lock. Initially I had issues adding it to my thread network, but that was only because I had my Thread and Zigbee networks on the same channel so can’t blame Nuki for that. Once I switched the channel I was able to add it no problem. Integrates with Home Assistant via using the Matter integration pretty easily. Of course you will need a Thread Border Router to be able to integrate it via Thread. Im not sure if it can also do Matter over Wifi, you should double check the documentation if thats what youre wanting. Even without Home Assistant you still have the option of using it with the Nuki app, which also implements an auto unlock feature thats geofence and bluetooth low energy proximity based just using your phones location and bluetooth. One of the Nuki founders was a guest on the Home Assistant Podcast, and they got this into the ‘Works with Home Assistant’ program which gives me impression that Nuki as a corporation is one of the better Open Source Home Automation community members. I put them in the same category as Shelly, which are companies that dont have a vendor lock in strategy (under the present management at least).(UPDATED 2025 Sept) After having this for 3 months still running great. This has easily become the automation with the highest Home (or Spouse or Family) Approval Factor for my household.Haven’t had to recharge battery yet, at this rate I’ll probably get 8-9 months total battery life before needing to charge. This is in a household of 2 working adults that both have auto unlock setup.

Not working well in Home App
The good: It looks sleek and mounts easy on the door and works well with its own app, but that’s it.The bad: very hard to pair with HomeKit (discloser: I work in IT and I am not a novice). After finally pairing it with HomeKit it worked for exactly 5 minutes. Afterwards it lost connectivity to Home application couldn’t connect and couldn’t use it. I unpair it and repeated everything again, with the same result.Everything was updated to the latest OS and firmware. The instructions on how to mount are missing key elements. The instructions on how to pair with HomeKit app are completely wrong.I really wanted this to work, but I needed all the functionality the Mater-over-Thread was promising to provide plus the Premium feature.

A great smart lock with a few installation quirks.
The Nuki Smart Lock is a fantastic piece of hardware that feels incredibly well-made. The locking and unlocking mechanism is smooth and powerful, and the overall build quality is a noticeable step up from other smart locks I’ve used, including the Yale lock. The built-in WiFi is a game-changer, eliminating the need for a separate, clunky gateway that needs to be plugged into an outlet. This makes for a cleaner setup and, in my experience, a more reliable connection. The keypad with its physical buttons is a welcome feature, and the integrated fingerprint reader is fast and accurate. While the hardware is top-notch, I did run into a couple of minor issues during the software setup. The initial firmware upgrade got stuck, requiring me to restart the lock and the app to get it to complete. The door sensor also took a few attempts to calibrate correctly, but once it was set, it has worked flawlessly. One feature I do wish it had is support for Apple Wallet, which would allow for seamless entry. Here’s a quick comparison with the Yale lock I previously owned:* Build Quality: The Nuki feels significantly more premium and durable.* WiFi: Nuki’s built-in WiFi is more reliable and convenient than Yale’s required plug-in gateway.* Keypad: The Nuki keypad’s physical buttons and fingerprint reader are a significant improvement.Installation Tips:To save yourself some time during installation, here are a couple of things I learned:* When you are installing the mounting plate, make sure the small line indicator is facing directly up before you attach the screws.* Before you fully tighten the mounting screws, attach the gear to the lock. This will allow you to adjust and center the mount perfectly. If you tighten the screws down first, you may find that the gear doesn’t seat properly.Overall, despite a couple of small software hiccups during setup, I am very impressed with the Nuki Smart Lock and would highly recommend it.
