Decent quality, usable, low cost strips.
I don’t believe that you can fairly review blood glucose test strips without context and a comparison to a known standard product. They are part of a system used by a diabetic to manage that condition. So here is my story and my conclusion.I was laid off during the Great Recession just before my birthday. Without an income, and uninsurable, metering as I had been was simply not affordable. I dropped back from four to one test per day and started looking for an alternative. After extensive research I found that a company based in Taiwan was making meters and strips. These are in widespread use outside the US. In fact that company was producing more strips than the “big 3” combined, and its strips cost less than $0.25@ retail. I bought one of their meters, compared it to results with My One Touch Ultrasmart and found the results were within 5%. With it, I was able to keep my HbA1c results in the low 6’s.I used products from that Taiwanese company until the cost of their strips doubled without warning this fall, possibly because of indirect effects of the Trump tariffs.I bought an inexpensive meter from Walmart which had similar features. Its strips were slightly less expensive that my former ones now were, and continued looking. That how I found the Embrace (basic) meter. After a week of side by side testing against my previous meter, I found virtually no difference in results. or features. As with all voice meters, the voice is clear, distinct and will easily penetrate background noise. That is a boon for those with impaired vision. This meter is slightly more awkward for me to use, as I don’t need the voice feature and it is a disturbance in public unless you disable it.The pros:1. It’s accurate.2. Cost of strips is low.3. It has a 300 test memory, averaging , and a download port.4. The “maker” Omnis Health LLC has been around for more than a decade.5. The meter has a 5 year warranty. The cons..1. It is harder to insert test strips than with any meter I’ve used previously and rather than being “instant”, there is a 2-second delay after inserting them before the meter turns on.2. The control buttons are all on the left side of the meter. This is ok if you are using it as a basic meter. It is awkward if you want to frequently look at averages or upload readings.3. The mode select button is tiny and stiff. If the user has peripheral neuropathy it may be very hard to use.4. The display has no back light, however it is easy to read and the voice option can reduce reliance on it.5. The cost of the strips is unusually low – half of what they are sold for by Walmart, Walgreens, etc who can and do buy direct from manufacturers in large quantities.6. The meter and strips I received from this seller are private labelled from “Healthwise Pharmacy”, a second tier distributor who private labels products.7. The warranty is from Omnis Health LLC, a small distribution company, not a manufacturer. Not unusual because only the largest companies design and have contract manufacturers build their meters. Most of the smaller ones sell meters and strips made in Taiwan that are private labelled.ConclusionThis is a good glucose metering system. As long as you don’t get a defective meter and you use control solution to test a sample of each batch of strips, you should be able to use it with confidence. The strip cost is low. You can not rely on the price of the strips to stay this low or the strips continuing to be available.
