Long but a good book with lots of insights and things that are useful to a parent/caretaker
I got this book as a way of learning more about my son who is 3 right now but has shows signs of being on the spectrum and who is currently awaiting the medical diagnosis. I wanted to get ahead and I wanted to learn of ways to be there for him and more about who he is thru this and not just the label of it all. I have a daughter who has ADD and because of that and the fact that even now years after her diagnosis I still find myself lost about where I can help her when she is struggling. So when I seen this book I jumped at it I didnt give it much thought and I even seen other books after this but it was something that drew me in particular to this one. I will say I couldnt read it in one setting I am not much of an advid reader these days I mean I can be if its something that really draws me in but I dont get drawn in completely to this book just because there is alot of talk about the diagnosis part of it and alot of things that I am aware of already but its medical jumbo if that makes sense but I will say there are some really interesting insights that I have read as well as some really good helpful things to implement into our actual lives and have been able to incorporate into his speech class as well. I am only halfway thru the book and have gotten some pretty good information on things that could help my son as well as understanding some things about him. I will say not all the book is going to be for everyone just because I am really starting to see that the spectrum is wide and if you dont have a sense of that yet which I didnt before I def get that now because there was some parts I couldnt relate to but I mean our son is only 3 too so it could be things I havent seen yet with his being so young. Overall thou I would def encourage any parent or caretaker of someone who has a child on the spectrum to really read on it because it truly allows you to learn about who your child is, why they do certain things, things that can help them, ways to interact with your child and so much more and like I said I am only halfway thru this book. I do truly think this will only help you to be a better parent in the long run and will essentially help your child as well because to understand one is to be closer I think. Overall I am glad I found this book and thou it can be a little long in my option I have gained some helpful insight that I am happy to have put to use.

Lovely book for parents and professionals! Pediatric Nurse Approved 🙂
I loved how informative this book is while also being an easy read. Dr Knapp artfully simplified big concepts in an engaging, easy to understand way that would be helpful to parents and professionals alike. I especially enjoyed the real life examples he provided and his tips he gave, pearls of wisdom he likely acquired over the years. It is obvious that Dr Knapp is passionate about helping children with autism thrive by empowering their family with knowledge and skill set to best support them. I am a pediatric nurse so I volunteered to read and review this book and I am so glad that I did. I have cared for many autistic children in a hospital setting but I now feel better prepared on how to connect and tailor my care for a child on the spectrum. I will also be sharing some of his tips with the parents. Thank you Dr Knapp! – Amber

Knowledgeable author; perfect for those with newly diagnosed children
I really like how the author is so knowledgeable on this subject matter. It has been years since my child was diagnosed so we are more experienced, but I wish I had this book when we just found out. Despite already having extensively researched this subject, I still found plenty of good info in this book.I would say that this is geared towards those with children in need of moderate to extensive interventions. It does address mild cases, and it specifically addresses the pitfalls of calling those children “high functioning,” however the bulk of the information is for those that are moderate to severe. I would definitely recommend this book.

Practical guide for parenting autistic child
This book was a practical guide for parenting a child on the autism spectrum. Our child is older, but this would have been very appropriate for a newly diagnosed child’s parents. It includes info about managing expectations, being flexible, taking care of yourself, how to navigate your marital relationship and other siblings in the house, and so much more. The concepts were simple and straightforward, and so very important to know going into parenting an autistic child.
