What foods to put on your table so you don’t end up on mine
For the past century, we’ve been bombarded with diet ads and advice from gurus and governments. Yet heart disease remains the #1 killer worldwide, and 88% of adults are metabolically unhealthy. Up to 95% of dieters gain back all the weight they lost while following both dietary guidelines and popular fitness fads.
Here’s why they fail.
Most diet books teach you to set short-term weight loss goals. Whether low-carb or low-fat, the typical plan goes like this: restrict your food choices, exercise until exhaustion, and swallow stacks of supplements. These “solutions” do a better job of lightening your wallet than lightening you.
Meanwhile, the healthcare industry fails to prevent chronic disease. Rather than showing people how to remain healthy and prevent illness through proper nutrition, the system offers drugs and surgery to manage symptoms.
As a heart surgeon who used to be morbidly obese, Dr. Philip Ovadia has seen firsthand the failures of mainstream diets and medicine. He realized that what helped him lose over 100 pounds was the same solution that could have prevented most of the thousands of open heart surgeries he has performed—metabolic health.
What you eat determines how long and how well you live. Yet most doctors don’t learn that in medical school. And pharmaceutical companies and food manufacturers have a vested interest in the public not knowing how to live and eat metabolically healthy.
In Stay off My Operating Table, Dr. Ovadia shares the complete metabolic health system to prevent disease and optimize your health, a system that the diet and drug industries don’t want you to know about. Unlike quick-fix, “7-day,” radical diets, Dr. Ovadia’s approach is a sustainable, long-term solution that works. This book teaches:
How most leading causes of death are rooted in metabolic diseaseHow to measure and improve your metabolic health, from a doctor’s perspectiveHow to eliminate your need for most supplements with a nutritionally complete dietHow to eat metabolically healthy on any diet, from carnivore to veganHow light, everyday exercises benefit you more than brutal workoutsHow metabolic health holds the answer to most health, food, and fitness questions
Whether you’ve suffered from chronic diseases or want to prevent them decades from now, Stay off My Operating Table will help you take back control of your health from the institutions and experts that have failed you.

The smartest docs are turning away from carbs.
The low-carb gurus and the high-carb gurus can usually agree on one thing — get the highly processed crap out of your diet! But once you’ve done that, what’s next? Should you go plant-based or animal-based? To decide, you need to check your metabolic health. Someone who is metabolically unwell should go low-carb; that much we know. Someone who is metabolically healthy, on the other hand, can handle carbs, so a vegan diet would be OK for them as long as they take the proper supplements. Those are the people who could go the Esselstyn way. But if you are metabolically unhealthy, all those carbs are NOT a good idea. If you are metabolically unhealthy, this is the book for you. 🙂

Should be required reading for all medical professionals
I needed this book. Due to multiple long-term health problems, I was convinced that medications alone were not what was best for me. I did a 60-day elimination diet of only beef, eggs, butter, salt, & water (no dairy, coffee, tea, seasonings, or plants of any kind). Even though I was mildly nauseous the 1st 30 days, wonderful things began happening & the pain I’d lived with for decades began to get better every day. After the 60 days, I began adding 1 new thing to my diet to see how my body reacted. I found that while I could tolerate small amounts of dairy & a few seasonings like dill, rosemary, thyme, cumin, and truffle salt, the pain would resurface if I ate any other plants, even seasonings (even a sprinkle of black pepper). I was just happy to feel full all the time, not have cravings, not be in pain anymore, & to not have to take any medications so I didn’t care how restrictive this diet was. However, I wanted to know why this was working for me. That’s when I found this book. Dr. Ovadia explains it perfectly. This gave me the insight I needed to understand the path to health I’m on. Also, he provides several resources for those who need additional help from medical professionals (the ones who actually understand the importance of metabolic health), he gives examples for how to implement the most important changes, he lists the markers that we should all consider when assessing our health, & there’s even an FAQ section at the end containing questions his patients have asked him over the years (I found this section particularly helpful). I’m glad I found what I was looking for in this book.

To staying out of hospitals.
This book is packed full of good information intended to help people understand what is happening to them and how to reverse it. Take your time reading it and re-reading it to communicate with your physician about what you are doing differently now and hopefully how your changes are getting better results.

My favorite!
I’ve read several books on topics similar to this over the last year in an effort to educate myself and improve my health. I would say this book is my favorite. It’s easy to understand, objective, and validates everything else I’ve learned making me even more confident in the direction I’m heading. If I was to refer friends or family to one book about metabolic health — one that I’m confident will help — this would be it. It’s practically the only resource you need! But also find a doctor similar to Dr. Ovadia. It’s so important that your doctor truly understands good nutrition and is looking out for your best interest. Good nutrition has nothing to do with our government’s food pyramid and especially nothing to do with pharmaceuticals.

Highly recommend
You should read this book!!! I’ve just had a CT scan that tells me I have heart disease. I haven’t needed a doctor my entire life. 🙂. And can’t find a doctor who will take my Medicare coverage. (I bought a package for the CT scan thru a company who does full body scans. Then I take it from there. So this book may help keep me alive till I find a cardiologist. Or will I even need a doctor, if I follow these instructions? Great info!

Dr. Ovadia lays it all down in concise, easy to follow steps for everyone. It shows how passionate he is about really helping people wake up to proper nutrition, self care, and self advocacy. I am 3 weeks to a month into the keto lifestyle, and I have so much energy and wondered how I ever got along before. 56 yes old and loving life right now.😀
