The New York Times bestselling author of Eat to Live, Super Immunity, The End of Diabetes, and The End of Dieting presents a scientifically proven, practical program to prevent and reverse heart disease, the leading cause of death in America—coinciding with the author’s new medical study revealing headline-making findings.
Dr. Joel Fuhrman, one of the country’s leading experts on preventative medicine, offers his science-backed nutritional plan that addresses the leading cause of death in America: heart disease. An expert in the science of food, Dr. Fuhrman speaks directly to readers who want to take control of their health and avoid taking medication or undergoing complicated, expensive surgery, the two standard treatments prescribed today.
Following the model of his previous programs that have successfully tackled conditions from diabetes to dieting, Dr. Fuhrman’s plan begins with the food we eat. He focuses on a high nutrient per calorie ratio, with a range of options for different needs and conditions. He shows us what to remove and what to add to our diets for optimum heart health, provides menu plans and recipes for heart-healthy meals and snacks, and includes helpful questions for doctors and patients.
By understanding heart disease and its triggers, Dr. Fuhrman gives us the knowledge to counter-attack this widespread epidemic and lead longer, healthier lives.

Wonderful, accessible book, excellent recipes in the back. VERY effective at lowering heart disease risk if strictly followed.
Life saver! Wonderful book, very easy to read yet has all of the sources cited for further analysis. I just completed a 6 week Nutritarian diet experiment (>95% compliant) based on the recommendations of this book, and the results are staggering, especially because before my diet I have always been an ovo-lacto flextarian which I would say is 60% compliant with Nutritarian guidlines. I would say the shift in food preference was large, but the results were surprising considering I thought I was a healthy eater before. This book is what finally convinced me to take the plunge! So my stats: I’m 32 years old, male and been between 180-190 pounds the past 5 years. I cycle 13 miles 3-4 times per week and run a 5k 1-2 times per week. I generally do not lift weights or strength train beyond push ups and situps. So, before and after results:Before (Flextarian diet, ~160 minutes of moderate exercise per week, focus on olive oil, ~7 drinks per week, no limitation on salt)Weight: 185Cholesterol: Total 176; HDL 52; LDL 109; Triglycerides 77Blood Pressure: 120/76 (avg)All considered good by modern medicine norms, right? After 6 weeks of >95% compliant Nutritarian diet (No meat, dairy, oils, salt or alcohol)Weight: 177Cholesterol: Total 139; HDL 46; LDL 81, Triglycerides 53Blood Pressure:106/62 (avg)Very surprised at these results considering I had told myself my diet and exercise were very healthy before. If I was to offer advice to anyone doing this diet, I will say this: You must do it cold turkey and you must remove temptations from your house! The diet will taste very bland the first week, but it gets much better as your palate adjusts, I promise. If you’re married or living with your partner, it will help if they adopt this diet as well. The number one item that I see cause failure is that a person does a lone diet shift and the family continues to eat a standard diet. Let’s just say if someone put an apple fritter and fish and chips in front of me I would have been VERY tempted to eat it. You don’t send a recovering alcoholic into a liquor store and neither should people attempting to adopt this very natural diet tempt themselves with processed or fried foods. Some other tips, I eliminated salt from my diet and utilized seasonings such as table tasty to replace it to good effect. I also adopted a lot of Dr. Fuhrman’s recipes in the back of his book, of which you will need a VERY powerful blender to process the nuts and make the dressings he recommends.I also used the GBOMBS metric to help balance my diet choices so I didn’t focus too much on one plant group or another. My biggest criticism, is that the information in this book counteracts everything in the standard western diet, however if you want to reduce or eliminate your risks of heart disease and boost your immune system, then this is an excellent way to do it without the side effects of modern medicine. While this data of lowering cholesterol via diet is being more and more supported in modern medicine and by in depth clinical trails, this book is very accessible to the average reader and an excellent start to change your eating habits!

Excellent book for learning how to prevent and/or heal heart disease
My husband had a mild heart attack four years ago. We realized immediately afterwards how fortunate he was to have had a warning rather than a fatal or severely disabling event. He’d always exercised, worked hard, been active, and he was only about 25 lbs. overweight. As a result of the heart attack, he listened to all of his doctor’s advice and changed his life. We immediately instituted a low-added-fat, lower-salt, primarily plant-based Mediterranean diet. He lost 20 lbs. without trying and all of his cardiac tests and numbers normalized. Then a year or so later, we mostly eliminated added sugar and animal products. As a result of moving to a primarily whole foods plant-based diet, my husband completely quit having arthritis pain/stiffness, and I quit having chronic migraines and fibromyalgia pain and stiffness. Our vitality has returned and, for me, not having constant migraines any longer has given me back my life. We also really enjoy that our diet now is much easier on our pocketbooks and on the Earth! It’s not easy sometimes to eat this way, especially at first until it becomes second nature, but the health benefits for us have been nothing short of miraculous. Over the past couple of years, I have learned to cook very enjoyable and satisfying plant-based meals. Via their websites and books (library and purchased), I’ve found the following physicians’ health and food/cooking advice to be invaluable: Joel Fuhrman, MD, John McDougall, MD, Michael Gregor, MD, and Dean Ornish, MD. I highly recommend this book (The End of Heart Disease) and others by these authors. Their advice and programs are life-changing.

Heart disease is a food borne illness and can be easily treated without drugs and procedures
This book is excellent though I still prefer Dr Esselstyn’s book on the same subject: Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease.Dr Furman explains convincingly that heart disease is a food borne disease that can be prevented, treated and cured by just eating properly. Heart t disease is not cancer! A whole plants diet with high nutrition value is the way to go. We should eat copious amounts of greens, nuts and seeds and take a few supplements such as B-12 and omega 3 fatty acids DHA/EPA.Dr Furman makes a strong case against taking statins: you are much better off eating high nutrition density foods and avoiding undesirable ones. Statins cause many problems such as diabetes, cataracts and muscle deterioration. Even aspirin is not a safe drug and you can avoid taking it if you follow his advice. He also goes into detail on why angioplasty, bypass and other procedures don’t work.Dr Furman advises against high glycemic index plant foods (though I am not convinced that eating a plain whole baked potato with skin is bad for you) In an ideal diet, Dr Furman would include only small amounts of whole grains. He likes green and yellow veggies, beans, nuts and seeds more than corn, potato and whole rice. Of course, he does not want you to consume any oil.Dr Furman’s advice is solid and will do you good if you follow it 100%. But I think since he focuses so much on greens, beans and veggies, and not on satisfying and tasty plant foods such as the corn, the potato or the whole grains, I think it is a lot less sustainable in the long term than say what Dr Esselstyn or Dr McDougall recommends. But an excellent book regardless.

For my husband who is because of his work always in great stress and sometimes wonders how to protect himself better from any unforeseen health problems such as the heart. He has been reading this yesterday when the book came in the post and today another 2 hours. He can see that the information is very helpful and has found a few things he is going to change now immediately in his life.We already were very careful with foods, all organic and so forth but this heart book is giving very much genuine insight with examples, menus (only a small part dedicated to that) and healing modules.Excellent to avoid getting a heart problem and if you already have one, delve into all the suggestions and follow the advice given to reverse any damage that might have been done to your heart and body.
