The Impulse of Energy: A physician lives with ALS
$34.99
What is the impulse that starts our hearts when we are born? And what keeps them beating? As both a skilled cardiologist and a humanist, Dr. Dhaval R. Patel contemplates this mystery in his new memoir, The Impulse of Energy. Diagnosed with ALS in 2020, Patel was forced to radically alter his lifestyle and adapt to the pernicious and degenerative affects of his disease. With candor and immediacy, he shares his process of adaptation. But far from being simply a lament over what has been lost, The Impulse of Energy counts the gains and demonstrates the profound vitality of memory. Patel conjures up seminal moments from his life— from childhood to the present— as he generously opens up his treasure box of memories for the reader. The Impulse of Energy demonstrates that when all else fails, it is our memories that regulate our hearts, keeping our heads above the waves and reminding us that, even in the wake of unimaginable difficulties, ours is
still a life worth living.

A Life that Made a Difference.
In the summer of 2019, less than a year before the author received his ALS diagnosis, he saved my husband’s life and became my family’s hero. Dr. Patel was unlike any other physician we’d ever met. He treated everyone in our family with profound kindness and respect and care at a time when we had given up hope. He exuded love, competence and compassion, and two of those things are atypical traits in physicians. My husband’s cardiologist, we found, had a huge, strong heart.”The Impulse of Energy: A physician lives with ALS” reflects the spirit of an amazing man. His has been a life well-lived…a life of learning about the world, himself, science and humankind. His has been a life of leading, encouraging, healing, contributing and growing. His has been a life of introspection, faithfulness, and example. This book reflects his strength of character, mind and spirit. This book is about a superhero.

Fantastic Book
This is a wonderfully written autobiography from a brilliant young Cardiologist who is battling ALS. It is a book you cannot put down so plan accordingly! 😉. Dhaval seamlessly weaves both past and present into this work, which was so well written I am literally about to read it for a second time.

Well worth the read.
The Impulse of Energy is a beautifully written testament to the human spirit and its willingness to rise above the terror of a devastating disease to discover who you are and your purpose in life.If you are not a medical professional or have known someone with ALS, it’s hard to fathom how dehumanizing this disease is. It affects not just you but your ecosystem. Always the quintessential Doctor holding to the first rule of doctordom, “do not harm,” he had managed to be informative, without being dramatic in details of the pain and horror of this wretched disease, while being vulnerable and maintaining a sense of everyone’s dignity. It is a tribute and a thank you to all those who supported him. I got the sense that the greater underlying purpose and theme of this writing is an attempt to give his young sons the memories that they will never have the opportunity to make of what a good and strong man is in a world with little understanding of masculinity.I think an appropriate epitaph on his marker would be…..A life well done.

Energizing
This book opened my eyes to a whole new understanding of what it is to live terminal disease and learn from yet. Dr. Patel gives an up close and personal account of his life story.
