The Luckiest Man: How a Seventeen-Year Battle with ALS Led Me to Intimacy with God

How do you experience God’s intimate, comforting, tangible presence? In The Luckiest Man, John Paine reveals how he found the answer to this most important of all questions–by facing a terminal diagnosis.
At middle age, John Paine thought he knew what it meant to have a relationship with God. He was a successful businessman, a well-respected Christian leader, a Bible teacher, and–outwardly, at least–the spiritual leader of his family. He was satisfied and thought he understood what it meant to know and experience God. But did he?
John’s journey into true, mystical intimacy with God began when a neurologist diagnosed him with ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, and said, “Go home and get your affairs in order.” Seventeen years later, John tells his story, recounting the ways God intervened in his life, freeing him from all that prevented intimacy with God, even as John slipped into pain, paralysis, and further toward death.
In stunning, insightful prose, The Luckiest Man points to the God who lovingly, though occasionally painfully, drew John into the richness of friendship. In this profoundly moving memoir, John Paine reveals the secret to intimacy with God and provides hope to all who are in the middle of their own trials. They, too, will understand why John considers himself the “luckiest man.”

An inspiring and insightful story of how ALS transformed one man’s life
This book tells the incredible story of how the author has dealt with the debilitating disease of ALS. While it would be understandable that someone could be angry, depressed and hopeless having to face this incurable challenge, this book details how one man’s inner spirit and eternal perspective was transformed for the better. This book clearly spells out how adversity led the author to understand what is most important about life, success, validation and relationships. I was inspired to pursue a greater intimacy with God through its pages. Anyone who reads it–whether they face a disease like his or not–will draw lessons from its pages about true joy and happiness. John’s honest and transparent vulnerability about dealing with this terrible disease and his accurate and fair assessment of many well meaning–and not so well meaning–solutions that others have offered him are tremendously helpful for anyone facing difficulties and challenges in life. This is one of the most inspiring stories I have ever read.

This books helps you to value what is really valuable in life.
This story, written by a very courageous man, touched my heart in so many ways. I have had a very rough year, health wise, and reading his story has helped me to look at some things differently. I told a friend the other day that sometimes God will allow you to hit rock bottom, so that you will finally turn to Him. And this is exactly what John Paine has portrayed in this book. Through the help of this book, and other things, I realize that I can be thankful for my health issues, because they have brought me closer to God, and to my family. This is an amazing book, that I think everybody should read. It helps to make your value what is really valuable in life. I want to thank Jogn Paine for sharing his story in this book.

A inspiring and challenging story of a transformed life
Let me start by saying this book is so much more than a man’s fight with a terrible disease. This is a story about all of us. It is an inspiration on how to transform our distorted view of what relationship with God actually looks like. John’s story starts well before ALS ever enters the scene. Find out how John looked for (but did not initially find) the affirmation that he, like all of us, desperately seek through financial success and control. Join him and learn in his journey how God used this horrible painful disease to help him grow closer then he could possibly imagine to become “The Luckiest Man”.

God has used John Paine’s testimony to bless others
Having known John since he was in elementary school has been a blessing. When John came to my office and tearfully announced his ALS diagnosis, there was so much fear and uncertainty. Not until reading this book did I realize the life of pain he has endured. John realized strength that could only come from his Savior and Lord and the loving support from Margaret and his children to live a life of inspiration to everyone who reads this inspirational story. I encourage you to read it. You will be blessed.Mike BTyler, TX

A Great Testimony to Faith
I think John Paine and his co-author did a brilliant job of melding before and after, physical and mental, hope and despair, loss and faith. I have known several people who have dealt with ALS and it is a truly tragic disease. We all have a choice as to how we handle adversity and whether we grow closer to God or further apart from Him. John Paine handled his disease the way that I hope I could if something similar happened to me. Great story and well presented. John H.

Outstanding book!
When I started the book I could hardly put it down. It met me where I was at and then reached down into my heart. It helped me to begin to ask serious questions about my life. Thanks John for helping me move from my head to my heart. I urge any of you reading this review to pick-up the book and read it. It will help raise questions in your life that need addressing, much like it dif in my life.

A Very Transparent and Honest Account..with no preaching.
Not preachy..Thank you!! (Who wants to be preached at?) John is surprisingly transparent, candid.. John pulls no punches. He doesn’t candy coat anything.. and reveals the stark contrast between religion and relationship. The most beautifully-written personal account of transformation I’ve ever read. No schmultz, no sickly-sweet posturing. Absolutely a stunning personal account that I couldn’t put down. I’m giving it away to lots of my friends.

excellent read!
This is an excellent read! Very honest and real. I am very familiar with the illness as my beloved father died of ALS when he was only 57. My dad, also John, understood as well that life is not about duration but rather donation. The goal of life should not be “success “ but rather surrender. John has struggled well and surrendered well being a tool in the masters hand. Enjoy this book, you won’t be disappointed.

So important to understand how people face such intense trauma and grief. Well written, even if a bit repetitive at times.
