TEACCH (Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication-handicapped CHildren) has grown over the past three decades from a small clinic for children to an internationally recognized treatment and support modality for individuals of all ages with autism spectrum disorders. In The TEACCH Approach to Autism Spectrum Disorders, the program’s founders and their colleagues explain its methods and philosophy based on an understanding and respect for “the culture of autism.”
The TEACCH program focuses on persons with autism and the development of instruction and supports based on each individual’s skills, interests, and needs. It draws from the research literature in psychology and neuropsychology to create activities and environments that are organized to emphasize meaningfulness―an approach that has proved crucial to an autistic individual’s ability to learn, comprehend, and apply learning across situations.
The TEACCH Approach to AutismSpectrum Disorders explains how:
– TEACCH targets critical areas in executive functioning, engagement, communication, and social skills.
– Strategies can be tailored to an individual’s unique developmental and functional level.
– Parents become involved in all phases of intervention as collaborators, cotherapists, and advocates.
– The program can be introduced and adapted for individuals of all ages, from preschool children to adults.
– Professionals can be trained in the program and its methods.
This progressive program offers individuals with autism, their families, teachers, and therapists both optimism and useful strategies, without minimizing the condition or its effects. All clinicians working with people with autism will find The TEACCH Approach to Autistic Spectrum Disorders a valuable resource.

TEACCH program does more to meet needs of autistic children than any other program.
The TEACCH program is the only program based on brain dysfunction – as opposed to behavioral theory (ABA) that ignores neurology and brain function and only teaches to observed behaviors. The TEACCH program uses structured teaching and I encourage every parent and educator to study this program. I am a parent of an adult child with autism and have 30 years of teaching experience. Anyone who claims that a particular program can cure autism (a brain disorder) is being highly deceitful and is not helpful to parents or children with autism. Children with classic autism do not learn like typical children through observation and imitation so they require a predictable and structured environment to learn mainly through rote memory. Although the TEACCH program needs updating to incorporate current brain science, it provides excellent basic advice.

A Book in review
This is an excellent resource for understanding the philosophy of the treatment orientation known as TEACCH. As you read, you realize just how deeply committed these people are to partnerships with people with ASD and their families. Theirs is not a doctor/patient relationship, but is rather a cooperative effort in which each person appreciates and builds on the other’s strength. In this sense, autism becomes more a particular way of looking at the world than a disability; that is, people with autism are supported through an understanding of their strengths and not their difficulties. TEACCH looks at what is possible, not what can never be because of a diagnostic label. Well written, thoroughly researched and an easy read. I recommend it highly.

Fair prince, great condition
Great condition, good price. If you’re only going to buy one book on this method, this is the title.
NeuroDiverse –
Excellent resource for cited material
This is an excellent resource for cited research on autism, in addition to being very informative on the TEACCH program.

What a wonderful resource!
I found this book useful on so many different levels. First, as a teacher of students with autism and related conditions, there were so many ideas to try. Second, as a parent of an adolescent on the spectrum, I found the sections on adults very informative. Mesibov is one of those rare professionals that takes into account the perspectives of those on the autism spectrum. This book not only recognizes individuality, but celebrates it! Truly one of the most helpful books I have come across!

boring
boring…if you are looking for information, go to a workshop or read it online. I couldn’t get through this book without a professor telling me to read it.

Excellent livre de référence pour les professionnels voulant s’informer sur le TEACCH, l’autisme et l’enseignement structuré. Par contre il est essentiel de comprendre et lire l’anglais pour bien profiter de ce livre.

This product was expensive but I decided to get it on kindle to reduce my costs. It was well worth it though and gave me lots of great information for my SENCo qualification. Easy to read.
