Don’t you wish relationships came with a manual? Ashley Stanford has written a user’s guide to relationships that adopts a practical troubleshooting approach to resolving difficulties that will greatly appeal to the logical minds of individuals on the autism spectrum, as well as offering valuable guidance to their partners. Troubleshooting identifies problems and makes them fixable. This book presents a three-step troubleshooting process that can defuse even the trickiest relationship dilemma. Specific problem areas are covered in detail including communication, executive functioning, mindblindness, attachment, intimacy, co-habiting, and raising a family. The book offers straightforward solution-focused strategies and additional help is given in the form of bulleted lists, summaries, scripts, and example scenarios.

A must have for anyone dealing in this area
The person for whom I bought it purchased three more copies. They also were able to finally own the dx. Found it immensely helpful and useful. Plans to write to the author.

    Read it too late.
It was not what I needed at this time. Not the books fault. It would have helped 40 years ago.

    Good intentions, poor delivery.
It would have been a good idea to have autistic people read over the book before sending it off to print because some of the presentations are absolutely awful.”The ultra-logical brain” is one of the less offense phrases, but offensive nonetheless.I am not ultra logically brained. I FEEL as much as anyone does. I think and process information differently – my neurons communicate in different ways, my synapses fire differently, and my ability to quiet down the world and stimulus around me, significantly decreases by being unable to cease processing ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING.When I do go to speak, I am as succinct as possible, so I don’t have to explain my exact thought process and how I got there. If I expressed every emotion I experienced while working through a problem, I would be so auditorily overwhelmed, particularly during a lengthy give and take of conversation, that I’d have nothing left after. I’d need to decompress because it was exhausting to shove new information inside, sort, then process. Short summaries, or difficulties forming words does not mean I don’t feel.Oh, and even taking a long to process something, meaning I may not respond how you expect in that moment doesn’t mean that I don’t feel, or don’t care – in fact, I feel EVERYTHING.I am not ultra logical. I have a communication barrier and to think and treat autistic people as though we experience a cold or lesser set of emotions is a huge mistake.

    You’ll laugh, you’ll cry
There’s a reason you haven’t heard of this book. Yes, I’m reading them all so you don’t have to. I’ve seen worse, but this one is terrible. Our ASD-wife-a-lot wants you to think she’s reinventing the wheel, and if you’ve never heard of CBT or REBT type therapies her MARITAL PROBLEM SOLVING FORMULA will be a revelation.Stanford is a prescriptivist — dictating specifically what changes women are not to ask for in their men — gross table manners are something we shall learn to accept, along with any core attitudinal and behavioral modifications that could “emasculate” them. She even advises we avoid using the word “repair”, a leading concept in relational skill-building.Yet another asp-hole apologist pandering to the patriarchy, you ask? Appears that way. Why, apropos of nothing she writes a persuasive paragraph about “doing what you don’t want to do” the way she did when their kids were little and she wasn’t in the mood for sex very often but went ahead anyway and found 9 out of 10 times she enjoyed it quite a bit. Pretty good odds! The best way to overcome the notorious defensiveness of the autistic husband? Make yourself physically smaller during arguments. On the floor works best, that way you can get some stretches in while you’re groveling for your 2 minute squirt.Books by qualified, educated, scientifically-informed couples counselors with advanced degrees are still a thing if you’re in an ASD/NS union seeking emotional (sorry, relationships are built on this) well-being.
