Very Late Diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome (Autism Spectrum Disorder)
Original price was: $23.95.$22.51Current price is: $22.51.
As awareness and understanding of Asperger Syndrome and Autism Spectrum Disorder increases, more adults are identifying themselves as being on the spectrum and seeking formal diagnosis. This book discusses the process, the pros and cons, and the after-effects of receiving an autism diagnosis in adulthood.
Outlining the likely stages of the journey to diagnosis, this book looks at what the individual may go through as they become aware of their Asperger characteristics and as they seek pre-assessment and diagnosis, as well as common reactions upon receiving a diagnosis – from depression and anger to relief and self-acceptance. Combining practical guidance with advice from personal experience and interviews and correspondence with specialists in the field, the book discusses if and when to disclose to family, friends and employers, how to seek appropriate support services, and how to use the self-knowledge gained through diagnosis to live well in the future.

Empowering, important and timely for new adult Aspies.
Ha, I’m an Aspie and didn’t know it until recently. This book is empowering because it quickly leads to better understanding, actionable strategies and real world improvement. We’ve come a long way in understanding Asperger’s. Far enough to realize a lot of us adults never had the opportunity to better understand what makes us different. If applicable, this could be a very timely and important book for you or someone you care about. It certainly is for me.Based on the understanding of the 60s & 70s, I was ADD/ADHD. I accepted that, but have read a lot on the subject and found much of the criteria for ADD wasn’t a good match for my symptoms. What I did notice was that ADD and Asperger’s are similar enough that and Aspie could be mistaken for ADD. And they both respond well to the same lifestyle management strategies (diet/nutrition, exercise/rest, etc.).Decades ago, I read the DSM3 on Asperger’s, but it didn’t grab me. The DSM5 has come a long way, but most of the focus has been on boys and now girls… not much for older adults.I’m a generally happy guy, but understanding what makes me different, my strengths and weaknesses, how to better understand people I care about, really makes me happier. I have a really good life, but I feel I owe a lot of it to the strategies in this book. It’s what I wish I knew before, all in one book. I’ve read a few books on Asperger’s, but this title is very specific and if applicable, I highly recommend you allow this book to change your life.Hope that helps, Sincerely, Ken :^)

Very Enlightening!
I bought the book when our son was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder three years ago at 52 years old. He found it to be very helpful; more so than any of the other books he’d read on ASD. I would recommend it for any adult who believes they are on the spectrum, or has been diagnosed. As a result I discovered that I am also on the spectrum.

Aspergers recognized in middle age
Amazing and mind opening perspective.

Great for the book’s intended audience
Finally found a great book that wasn’t written to parents of an autistic child. I’m a 60-year old newly diagnosed Aspie. I bought quite a few books that seemed good, but it’s impossible for me to ask my mommy and daddy or relate as if I’m a parent of an autistic child. This book is 100% relatable for me.

in an easy, logical way
At 67, I was relieved to know why I always “felt different.” After taking several online Asperger tests, I searched for books to learn more, but found very few that really helped me to navigate this new terrain. Philip Wylie carries you through, in an easy, logical way, what to expect of yourself, your family, friends, and co-workers. Wish I had known all this earlier in life, but even so, this book has made me feel much more capable of determining my own destiny, without feeling handicapped in any way. In fact, I now appreciate my differences instead of agonizing over them.

Very, very late diagnosis of ASD
This is just what I was looking for at just the right time. I received my ASD diagnosis even later than the author of this book did, at age 57. I felt cheated out of life. I also felt I deserved an Academy Award for the long-term performance I have put in, just to fit in to this world designed by Neurotypicals. I have confidence now, as a result of my diagnosis and confirmation by this book. I will now “re-invent” myself, armed with who I am, what my shortcomings are, confirmation of my strengths, and courage to press forward and have fun, now that I have retired from a 30-year career doing what should have been the impossible. All without knowing I was on the Spectrum!! Watch Out World!!!!

Helpful
This book provides a map and understanding of what it is like to have ASD. It gives useful information and links to additional information. I’m happy I bought it.

I found this an excellent if slightly off-beat book. There is a lot of really useful advice and the writing style is clear and interesting. I bought it because it has been mooted very recently that I might be on the autistic spectrum and I am 53 years old. I have read another reviewer criticise the book for being impractical and unorthodox. I found that although it contains opinions not everyone would agree with, the amount of compassionate and down-to-earth wisdom here will satisfy almost anyone. I highly recommend.

I have not completed this book as of yet. I was diagnosed at age 56. I am surprised at how accurate it is. Every time I pick up this book I learn something about myself. I have had it for a year and kept trying to read it but a busy schedule kept interrupting. This book offers hope, understanding and validation. I will probably edit this upon completion.

Was recommended this following my diagnosis at 50. There are a lot of resources available out there but this held some additional perspectives I hadn’t come across before. I got value reading this post diagnosis , not sure how valuable it would have been pre assessment and before that wtf moment when the penny finally drops . Worth the money and read IMHO.
