Huntington’s disease, considered the cruelest disease on our planet is the Marin family secret that the three sisters, Lora, Marcia and Cindy, discover when they visit an aunt they have not seen in years. The story begins with John Marin, their brother, and Therese Crutcher, his fiancé, learning of the news that the siblings have a 50/50 chance of inheriting the disease which has no therapy or cure. The news shakes Therese to her core, and she questions her engagement to John. After much soul searching, Therese takes the biggest gamble of her life and marries the love of her life knowing the possible consequences of her decision; at least two of the Marin siblings will fall prey to the disease and one of them could be John.Watching Their Dance is the first book to show the challenges a family experiences when living at risk for a neurodegenerative disease which has symptoms similar to ALS, Alzheimers and Parkinson’s. The book chronicles the life of John and Therese, over thirty years, as they journey through life shrouded in the uncertainty of Huntington’s disease. The story explores how living at risk for Huntington’s impacts their life on a daily basis, how Huntington’s is a factor in every important decision, how it impacts relationships, and addresses the coping skills Therese uses to manage and survive unimaginable stress and anxiety.Their lives were filled with unpredictability and pain, and yet full of love, good times, and great joy. Therese discovers acknowledging that her world could change overnight has made her life much richer. She learns to overlook shortcomings and to compromise, to let go of anger, to find joy in the simple things. The Marin siblings taught her—and can teach readers—about embracing life, forgiveness, and unconditional love.

To be human, and humane.
This is a wonderful book, and I am not biased, though I do know Therese professionally and have always appreciated her in that role. She had a whole other world at home that often revolved around the incredibly cruel genetic lottery that is Huntington’s Disease. Though this is a very difficult topic to write about and not have the book take on a completely depressing tone, Therese writes with sensitivity and honesty, and the underlying feel of this book is a very positive message of hope. This book is appropriate, and really a must read for all adults, young and old. To understand what it is to be a loving participant and caregiver in a family stricken with this cruelest of illnesses, to watch the different ways that those actually striken with the illness chose to live their lives…this book will make you appreciate your own smallest of blessings, marvel at the strength of family love and the human spirit, and, if you are dealing with any chronic illness in your own life, it will let you know you are not alone. It is an easy and fast read, Therese writes in a style that makes this a page turner. Highly recommend to anyone who wants to to learn more about being human, and humane.

I very much enjoyed reading this moving
I very much enjoyed reading this moving, honest memoir of my aunt’s experience with watching her sisters-in-law suffer and eventually die at the cruel hands of Huntington’s Disease. I never really knew just how debilitating the disease is; this book gives a first-hand and personal insight into the slow, but painful descent that Huntington’s leads its victims on. Her deep involvement (with my uncle’s help) in the frequent care of John’s sisters took its toll but she loved all three of these women dearly and never once thought twice about it. Her and John certainly had a lot of stress to overcome during this season of their lives. I truly admire their strength and resilience. The book also takes the reader on the journey of how Therese and John’s love story began. For her to decide to marry someone knowing that he may die an early and painful Huntington’s death, as well as pass the disease along to their future children, is not something that Therese took lightly. Who wouldn’t have second thoughts? But true love eventually overcame these fears and continued to blossom over many difficult years of an uncertain future together. Beautifully-written, poignant, and genuine….the book does not disappoint!

Honest story
What a family. I appreciated the author’s candor and descriptive language. A heartbreaking read with moments of light. The writing is excellent then struggles relying on pat phrases and seems to be missing a final edit. Overall, I recommend this book.

Magnificent! What powerful tribute to your entire family! We all benefit from hearing the depth love, compassion and the power of forgiveness extends. Bravo! A must read for all considered “at-risk.” I especially appreciate the positive experiences enfolded in the true nature of this family’s compound losses. Kudos!
The overview, details of the research on Huntington’s disease, and the utmost importance upon diligently respecting each person’s personal wishes is a gift of redemption. Naturally, we all wish we’d never have to consider leaving a heritage of anything but happily ever after; and yet, far from it we stand today. Sharing the Marin family story and donating proceeds of this book is generous beyond measure. Thank you!

3 of the Most Courageous Women Ever
I do not know if I could just keep going knowing a death so very too soon and that gruesome awaited me. I also don’t think I could have had kids knowing that there was a chance they’d die like that too. But then I think that most things in life are a crap shoot and her husband was right when he said he could walk outside and get hit by a car and die tomorrow so why worry about some disease killing him years from now. Anyway, his sister’s were very brave amazing women and I was honored to read their story.

Excellent book. A must read for anyone who is …
Excellent book. A must read for anyone who is dealing with a patient or family member who has this terrible disease. Our daughter is in her 11 year since diagnosed with this. This book covers what we already went through and what to expect down the road. Although no two cases are exactly the same, it will help you to know what to look for.. The other reviews that we’ve read are spot on.
