Using her personal experience living as a professional woman with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sarah Nannery, together with her husband, Larry, offers this timely communication guide for anyone on the Autism spectrum looking to successfully navigate work, life, and love.

When Sarah Nannery got her first job at a small nonprofit, she thought she knew exactly what it would take to advance. But soon she realized that even with hard work and conscientiousness, she was missing key meanings and messages embedded in her colleagues’ everyday requests, feedback, and praise. She had long realized her brain operated differently than others, but now she knew for sure: she had Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

With help from her neurotypical partner—now husband—Larry, mostly in frantic IM chats, Sarah rose to Director of Development at one of the world’s largest nonprofits. Together they have tackled challenges in how Sarah navigates personal and professional relationships, how they navigate marriage and parenthood, all of which are differently challenging for someone with ASD. But she wonders, at times, how life would be different if she’d had to figure it all out herself. So, in What to Say Next, she offers advice, empathy, and straightforward strategies from her own tool-kit—not only for others who see the world differently, but for their families, partners and colleagues.

In What to Say Next, Sarah breaks down everyday situations—the chat in the break room, the last-minute meeting, the unexpected run-in—in granular detail, explaining not only how to understand the goals of others, but also how to frame your own. Larry adds his thoughts from a neurotypical perspective, sharing what was going on in his brain and how he learned to listen and enlighten, while supporting and maintaining Sarah’s voice. At a time when more and more people are being diagnosed with ASD—especially women and girls—this book tells important truths about what it takes to make it in a neurotypical world, and still be true to yourself.

Helpful for understanding unwritten corporate rules
I’m an autistic person working in marketing who has struggled a lot with understanding corporate speak/expectations. As such, I’ve struggled to advance in meaningful ways. This book was helpful for understanding the unwritten rules of office life and how to work with neurotypical colleagues without having to mask to an unreasonable degree.

Written by and for autistic adults
As a therapist who works with autistic individuals I have a lot of books that are “brochure style” Therapy. Most put a lot of the recommendations out that are generic and not new. This book was written to help high functioning adults with the very nuanced and subtle teaching of social skills when they need to be adjusted, With emphasis on the person’s choice to choose to do this versus the world’s expectations. Emphasis on the new way of thinking about autism as another way of thinking, rather than a “diagnosis” To be treated that you come to find in many textbooks even now. One of the best I have found in a long time.Highly recommend if you are a therapist or an autistic adult, actually helpful.

    Insightful read
This book is a fabulous look into the intricacies and daily challenges of what it is like to be on the autism spectrum. The authors have done a wonderful job of giving first hand perspective and experiences in a very inclusive manner. I will definitely look at things with a different perspective and will work to be more aware and understanding with those who are neurodiverse.

    Exactly what our family needed
This book could not have come at a better time. Right when we are in the process of supporting our oldest with their transition into adulthood as a young person experiencing life on the spectrum, this book made its way right into our home. They have not been able to put it down and I expect that I won’t either.

The right book at the right time
Being trapped in my house during quarantine focused the spot light on my family and specifically our ability to communicate with each other. It was hard but this book definitely gave an insight into the nuanced of getting ideas across and what we are really saying. I very highly recommend it! It is essential.
