The difference that being female makes to the diagnosis, life and experiences of an autistic person is hugely significant. In this widely expanded second edition, Sarah Hendrickx combines the latest research with personal stories from girls and women on the autism spectrum to present a picture of their feelings, thoughts and experiences at each stage of their lives.
Outlining the likely impact will be for autistic women and girls throughout their lifespan, Hendrickx surveys everything from diagnosis, childhood, education, adolescence, friendships and sexuality, to employment, pregnancy, parenting, and aging.
With up-to-date content on masking, diagnosis later in life, and a new focus on trans and non-binary voices, as well as a deeper dive into specific health and wellbeing implications including menopause, PCOS, Hypermobility/Ehlers-Danlos, autistic burnout, and alexithymia, this is an invaluable companion for professionals, as well as a guiding light for autistic women to understand and interpret their own experience in context.

    Insightful
Such a great book, very insightful. This author has helped me understand myself and more about my own experiences with Autism. If you’re curious about how you relate to the spectrum or are simply researching autism itself, I highly recommend!

Perfect mix of empirical evidence and personal experiences
As an autistic woman who also has a sister with an autism, we found the structure of this book amazing and easy to follow. It has both empirical evidence and studies as well as accounts from 30 different female aspies and their experiences as children and adults with the disorder, as well as their parent’s experiences with it. This book gave me a new sense of self love and power I didn’t know I had. It made sense of all my “quirks” and “deficiencies” and reminds me that as autistic people, we are not disabled, but “differently able” as others say. We just work differently than neurotypical people and that’s ok. We also have unique quirks and talents.

Helped Me Find Out My True Self!
After many people suggested to me the possibilities of having adhd I decided to look into that fact, during my research I came across some information about autism so I delved further into that. Months passed and after discussing it in depth with my partner we came to the conclusion that I may be on the spectrum, and while searching for studies I found this book. After purchasing this book I was convinced that I had to be. I did see a doctor about it and sure enough !!If you want to know more about women on the autism spectrum or think you, yourself may be on the spectrum I recommend reading this book and discussing the possibilities with your doctor!I haven’t finished the book I’m not going to lie (perhaps my adhd brain there, as I can never finish anything I start), so I’m not sure if it discusses anything about how to live on the spectrum or how to manage life better. But I hope one day I can manage to sit down and finish it!

    Best book !!
I purchased four books from Amazon doing research on women with autism/Asperger‘s that were never diagnosed at a young age. This was the best book ever. I have highlights on almost every page. There are small sentences or paragraphs included on how women who are on the autism spectrum feel about certain things in their life. I could relate to so much of it. Thank you so much for writing this book! I’ve always known I was different. Thirty years ago I thought I was “kind of” autistic. I stopped telling anybody that because they would laugh at me. “You can’t be kind of autistic” But I had several traits. I did not bang my head And I did not flap my hands but I’m still autistic nonetheless. It all just came together with this book. I am who I am and now I’m not going to listen to any more bullying because someone else’s false beliefs of who they think I am or should be. There’s nothing wrong with me. I just think & react differently than others.TEN ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ to Sarah Hendrickx!

Super important book for aspies and everyone
If you happen to be an aspie, a spouse,a daughter or a mother of an aspie, a friend or a teacher of an aspie, or employ or are being employed by an aspie ( I have a feeling I covered just about everyone ), then you absolutely must read this book. The book covers all aspects of female aspie life, in an evidence based yet humorous way , and the stories the participants share are eye opening, and to those of us diagnosed aspies- you feel that you are not alone in this .I strongly recommend.

    great quotes from real women
I read it in one sitting. While it doesn’t offer a lot of how-to advice, its focus is really on sharing experiences of girls and women on the spectrum, with a lot of direct quotes. I really enjoyed it.

    Too analytical
I like to read a book that it is more of a story. This one was recommended by others and by my dr. However, it was to analytical for my liking. I wanted more personal experiences. I couldn’t finish the book.Perhaps one day, I might try to give it another try

Would give more stars if available.
This book was an excellent read. It was easy to get through, written in a very approachable manner, and provided many perspectives to help make sense of how different people might think about similar situations. I found it incredibly insightful. I also have found Sarah Hendrickx videos on YouTube that very much add to and expand on this content. If you are a woman or afab or your socialization was feminine gendered and you’ve been diagnosed as an adult, this book may be helpful for you to understand yourself a little better. If you are a friend or family member looking to support and adult or wonder what adulting on the spectrum may mean for a younger girl in your life, this may provide a look into what’s going on in her head and help you step into her world a bit.

This is a brilliant book for any female who thinks they might be autistic or has recently had a diagnosis. I’ve listened to the audio book – which is a bit annoying due to the constant references that have to be read out and that led me to purchase the physical book.I’m not at all disappointed and often go back and re-read this book. The author also has some really good YouTube videos on the subject and is very knowledgeable.
