A comprehensive, user-friendly medical yoga program designed for management and prevention of arthritis.

Arthritis restricts movement; yoga increases range of motion: these two were made for each other. Arthritis is the leading cause of disability in this country, limiting everyday activities for more than seven million Americans. Drugs, surgeries, and steroids can alleviate some of the discomforts, but study after study has shown that exercise is most beneficial to most forms of arthritis, specifically low-impact, flexibility-enhancing exercises―hence, yoga. In this comprehensive and thoroughly illustrated guide, Loren Fishman and Ellen Saltonstall, who between them have seven decades of clinical experience, help readers understand arthritis and give a spectrum of exercises for beginners and experts. Broken down into chapters focusing on each major joint, there are 100 classical yoga poses and numerous imaginative and physiologically sound adapted poses, all with step-by-step instructions and easy-to-follow photo demonstrations. The authors welcome readers into the philosophy and principles of yoga and show how to use yoga to find lasting relief from arthritis. 400+ illustrations

Eplains a lot, and very helpful
I have recommended this book to *many* people!Dr. Loren Fishman is an M.D. and an Iyengar-trained yoga teacher,as well as the managing partner of Manhattan Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Ellen Saltonstall is an author, a yoga therapist, a licensed massage therapist, a senior certified Anusara yoga teacher and she holds a masters degree in the field of therapeutic movement education. These two have studied yoga and the body… a *lot*! This book has step-by-step yoga poses, photographs (black&white), tables (“for the aid of therapists”), and lots of explanations of how things work and why things work regarding arthritis and yoga.I originally bought this book to use it to teach yoga to my 80-year-old (but very healthy) Dad.LOADS of tremendous help, tips, suggestions and alternatives. There’s even a chapter on scoliosis, and how to make it better.I will continue to recommend this book to anyone I think would find it useful.

spot on for arthritis and strength building
Knowledgeable and complete. all the info you need to begin reaping the benefits of yoga (pain relief, strength, flexibility, increased range of motion). Good, clear pictures that guide your efforts. Detailed instructions for each pose and adaptation. Breaks down difficult poses into graduated options so you can build into traditional poses over time without hurting yourself or creating more problems. I would recommend this book to anyone, no matter how involved your symptoms. If other forms of exercise or strength training have proved unsuccessful because you get injured and worsen your symptoms, this book is for you. You can do the poses without pain and with progress you can feel and see as your range of motion increases and your control improves.

    An excellent guide book
This is an excellent and thorough book on both arthritis and yoga. It’s so thorough that reading all the information, and the fine details about the poses, and when a pose is or isn’t recommended, will take some time and attention. I would say it would be helpful to have studied yoga for some time (as I have); I can’t quite imagine starting a yoga practice ‘cold’, just by reading the instructions the book offers. Not saying it’s impossible, if one starts really slowly and mindfully. All that said, I would heartily recommend this book to both students and teachers of yoga, and to those who want to keep moving even with arthritis.

    Good yoga instructions
I got this book from the library. Almost didn’t check it out because I just didn’t take it very seriously. Sure am glad I did get it. I’ll be buying my own copy now. There are so many instructions with each pose that it is a little difficult to do the pose correctly and keep looking at the book, but with practice I’ll improve. I would suggest if any subsequent versions are printed that they be spiral bound so the book can lay open flat. Some poses are too difficult or inversions which I just don’t do.Wish there had been more stretches for the feet and ankles. It was mostly hips and legs, which I understand is important, but I also would have been interested in more actual foot work. But it’s a good book and very helpful.

    Must have!
Has a lot of great work outs that’s easy on the body. Not a lot of pressure on your joints.

The publisher has failed to install links to poses or page number references, which makes it difficult to navigate in the Kindle version. Otherwise, very informative.

    Very thorough, practical guide
I bought this book based on very favorable comments about Loren Fishman by William Broad, author of The Science of Yoga: The Risks and the Rewards. I was not disappointed. Fishman as per Broad’s description, is a very no-nonsense doctor, prescribing asanas with evidence of actually helping arthritic joints. The different exercises he recommends are organized according to which of your joints are afflicted, but if you suffer from any kind of arthritis it might be a good idea to practice as many of his exercises as possible to prevent as well as ameliorate problems. Because I already have been using my own daily routine for a couple of years, I am not sure if I am going to replace some of my asanas with Fishman’s or add his exercises to what I am already doing. Thus far I have added one of his recommended exercises for knees (my primary problem area), and I am already noticing improved joint functioning and less pain from adding the practice. Good stuff.

The instructions in this book are excellent, as are the theory and the research. There are too many yoga resources for general health or people in general. When someone is new to yoga and – as is increasingly the case – looking for help for health issues, then yoga can not be general – nor was it ever intended that way.Yoga for Arthritis and Yoga for Osteoporosis are both brilliant resources for their target audience. And, in fact, because the yoga is presently so well, the yoga asana (poses) are so well described, these books will augment any serious yoga teacher’s collection of material and be very useful.

I’ve been teaching yoga about 17yrs and this is the most helpful book I’ve read. I wish I’d come across it many years ago. I will be incorporating a lot of this in my classes. I have moderate arthritis in my knees and hips and after only dipping into the variations with belts I can feel the benefit already. Thank you so much.
